The Glory Perfectly Balances Vengeance with Heart
★★★★★ Netflix’s “The Glory” is a suspenseful revenge story that will keep audiences captivated throughout its 16 episodes. The series kicked off Netflix’s 2023 releases with a bang. With its first part being released in December 2022, “The Glory” follows the story of Moon Dong-eun (Song Hye-kyo). Severely bullied by a group of five wealthy teenagers during her high school years, Dong-eun vows to exact her revenge as an adult.
‘ASSEMBLE’ is Frustratingly Disappointing
★★★☆☆ Despite some phenomenal tracks, tripleS’ mini-album “ASSEMBLE” struggles to be a cohesive project. tripleS is a 24-member rotational K-pop girl group in which, depending on fan choice, the members can form subunit, solo and full-group activities.
Red Velvet’s ‘Birthday’ is a Whimsical Celebration of the Absurd
★★★★☆ “Birthday” is an eccentric celebration of what Red Velvet does best: experimentation. Since their 2014 debut, Red Velvet has released a critically acclaimed and diverse discography, solidifying the group as a powerhouse within the third generation of K-pop. Red Velvet is characterized by their “Red/Velvet” concept of contrast; — “Red” tracks are fun and bold, while “Velvet” tracks are classy and elegant.
Rookie K-Pop Group NewJeans is Almost the Perfect Fit
★★☆☆☆ Rookie K-Pop group NewJeans adds a desperately needed creative flair to the genre in their self-titled debut EP “New Jeans,” but due to the exploitative nature of the title track “Cookie,” all bets are off. The five-member girl group consists of Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein. The group’s line-up has turned heads among K-pop fans: for example, Hanni is the first Vietnamese idol at HYBE Entertainment.
Thinking Thrifty: How Secondhand Stores Contribute to Georgetown Student Style
For Ana Cajina, manager of local consignment shop Frugalista in Columbia Heights, the COVID-19 pandemic brought an influx of a new customer demographic: college students. “I saw a shift in the pandemic. After two years, I can see now that young adults — 18, 20, 21 year-olds, college students — are more open to buying from a secondhand store,” Cajina said in an interview with The Hoya. “In 2015, I didn’t see that.
‘This Is the Story of my Life’: AASA Presents Cultural Fashion Show
CW: This article references sexual assault and anti-Asian violence. Please refer to the end of the article for on- and off-campus resources. After Ariel Le (NHS '24) breezed down a runway donning a regal red and yellow áo dài - a traditional Vietnamese gown - she recalled a feeling of empowerment in representing her Vietnamese [...]
‘Notting Hill’top: How Valentine’s Day is Celebrated at Georgetown
When Marieteresa Porcher Allen (MSB ’24) saw an influx of new faces on the Georgetown Ballroom Dance Team, she knew a Valentine’s Day Dance would be the perfect way to welcome them to an on-campus community in the age of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I mean, coming out of that whole isolation period, I feel like it’s so important, you know, to get those connections back and bond with people and, and just, like, be a part of society again,” Porcher Allen told The Hoya.
‘The Matrix Resurrections’ Takes the Blue Pill and Poorly Innovates Beyond Source Material
★★★☆☆ When given the choice between the red pill to innovate the franchise and the blue pill to stay the same, “The Matrix Resurrections” ultimately chose the latter. While “The Matrix Resurrections” captures the hearts of longtime Matrix fans with its heavy reliance on nostalgia from characters and settings, the film fails to evolve past its source material, producing a project that is fan service at best and frustratingly dull at worst.
Meditation and Mindfulness at Georgetown
Bathed in the early-morning light, among the flaming red changing leaves of nearby trees, Georgetown University students can find serenity tucked away in the oldest and smallest building on campus: a red brick structure on Old North Way across from New South Hall. The John Main Center for Meditation and Interreligious Dialogue (JMC) hosts daily meditations out of this tiny building, Anne Marie Becraft Hall.
Poppy Takes Her Sound Into Her Own Hands, Channels Anger With "Flux"
★★★★★ In her newest album, “Flux,” singer-songwriter Poppy (Moriah Pereira) attempts to reconcile the manufactured internet persona of her past with her current state of self-actualization, using tracks that critique societal norms by gazing inward. Since leaving her old label, Mad Decent, in July 2019, Poppy has slowly departed from her Poppy.Computer era, which was characterized by bizarre Youtube videos and funky pop tracks.
Cinderella Remake Fails to Modernize the Classic Fairytale
★★☆☆☆ Amazon Studios’ “Cinderella,” starring pop star Camila Cabello, attempts to provide a 21st-century take on the 1950s Disney classic. However, “Cinderella” fails to modernize the source material, making the film feel like a lackluster remake instead of the nuanced feminist film its directors were aiming to create.
SUNMI's Powerful 'TAIL' Defines Artist's Growth Beyond Wonder Girls
K-pop star SUNMI’s newest mini-album is an explicitly seductive work that showcases her growth from a teenage sensation to a mature woman. At 28 years old, SUNMI is a veteran of the K-pop industry. In 2007, at just 15 years old, she debuted under JYP Entertainment in the group Wonder Girls. Only a year after its debut, Wonder Girls received national and international acclaim for its retro-inspired hits “So Hot” and “Nobody,” cementing the group as one of the most notable in K-pop.
