Illinois Corn, Soybeans: Scouting for Early Season Pests After Late Start
It goes without saying that this spring has been a challenge. With extreme planting delays throughout the state, crop development is well behind normal expectations, while insect pest populations have continued to progress. In addition, the tight schedule we have faced has forced planting into less than ideal conditions in terms of both soil moisture and weed control, which can have consequences for insect pest management.
Arkansas Rice: With The Rain, Planting Ends - Now What?
Rains this week should essentially close the door on the 2019 rice planting season. Some areas received far less rain than anticipated, but it seems everyone received enough to put a halt to the week. Plenty of folks noted that they may have been finished planting a certain percentage of their intended acres, but with this rain they were finished. In other words, anyone who had planted 75% of his intended acres by Tuesday became 100% planted with the rainfall.

Cleveland on Cotton: Curve Balls Just Keep on Coming
If the cotton market were a heavyweight fighter the referee would have signaled a TKO this week. December futures have suffered 6 consecutive days of losses and going into Friday’s settlement the cumulative loss was 292 points, about 3 cents. Fundamental news was hard to come by, but demand, especially in a slowing of Chinese demand was noted. The slower business was non-tariff related as mills cut back hours and also yarn inventory began to build.
Texas Cotton: Remember the 15-Day ‘Replant Rule for Insurance Decisions
Cotton seedling: Photo: Debra L Ferguson Producers across the High Plains have struggled to complete cotton planting activity as frequent rainfall events have caused intermittent planting delays, damaged existing stands and increased seedling disease in many fields. Many growers are evaluating their options as they work to complete planting or determine which acres will be turned into insurance and possibly replanted.
After Unprecedented Spring, Planting Decisions Unfold for Corn Belt Farmers
Washington Post writers Andrew Van Dam, Laris Karklis and Tim Meko reported on Tuesday that, “Corn Belt farmers are used to being at the mercy of the weather. “But they are not used to the weather being quite this merciless. “Through all of April and all of May, wave after wave of rain hit the nation right in the breadbasket, with April capping the wettest 12 months on record for the continental United States.
