Abstract In New Zealand, embryo donors and recipients meet in a joint counselling session before donation where their needs and expectations for future contact are discussed. However, the extent and experience of contact - including that occurring before the mandated age of identity release at 18 - has received little international research attention and has not been explored in New Zealand.

Drawing on interviews with eleven participants, this study explored the motivations and experiences of same-sex and gender diverse couples who used known donors and home insemination methods to conceive.

Questionnaire The questionnaire was adapted from Goedeke et al.15, 16 for use with the student population. Item content for this questionnaire was developed from relevant donor conception, gifting and compensation literature and piloted with a range of parties, including consumers, fertility professionals and members of the public to enhance content and face validity. The questionnaire collected demographical information and participants' fertility experiences (Table 1).
