Tyson vs Botha....
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Tyson 2005, . Just a quick personal anaylisis on the fight, I wanna get you're take on it To me, Tyson Botha was one of Mike's greatest fights. Botha, a hard headed, South African beast, dubbed "The White Buffalo" (45-4-2). Goes up against IRON Mike Tyson(50-6-0), a fierce tiger, with no remorse what so ever. The battle goes 5 rounds and Mike knocks Botha out for the win.
Johnny Bumphus
I saw a thread in the General Forum about the most popular boxers in the history, and somebody answered Johnny Bumphus. I realize he's not the most popular but was he ironic. I looked him up and he had a pretty good record alhough he didn't have the best opposition. George Benton was his trainer and he was a fairly tall guy for the light welterweight division, plus he was a southpaw. Please fill me in about this guy.
Floyd Patterson v. Buster Douglas
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Sonny's jab, . At their absolute bests. Who would you expect to win ? I have to go with Douglas. His blend of speed and power in a heavyweight was akin to Greg Page and at his best he's gonna outgun Floyd IMO. Terrible style for Floyd. JohnThomas1 said: I have to go with Douglas. Steffen Tangstad
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by mr. magoo, . I never saw this Norwegian heavyweight in action. Steffen Tangstad's career stretched from 1980 to 1986. Along the way, he managed to compile a pro record of 24-2-2-14, and became the EBU champion on at least two separate occasions. His signature wins included victories over Joe Bugner, Alfredo Evangelista, Lucien Rodriguez and a draw with a young Buster Douglas.
Indeed. It fulfils every cliche of the genre, but when you have lines like the one you've mentioned and my favourite: SEAN CONNERY: You ready? NIC CAGE: I'll do my best. SEAN CONNERY: (Incredulous) Your best? Losers whine about their best. Winners go home and f*ck the prom queen. It's obviously going to be a cut above. I once used that Connery line at one of those terrible motivational conference things. It didn't go down great.
Ray Robinson was a slugger.......
I believe it is Reg Gutteridge 'The Big Punchers' where the author says he talked to Ray Robinson about his punch, and Ray always said he wasn't a puncher naturally. It was all due to his timing and accuracy that allowed him to catch his opponents by surprise and thus knock them down or out. Or using uncommon moves, such as throwing double and tripple hooks which was new for the time he fought at, and so his opponents weren't always ready for a repeated same punch. Click to expand...
ken norton overated or underated?
I think Norton gets a bad rap on a lot of stuff. People can say he looks like cannon fodder against punchers - and he might have done in certain big fights - but then they or others draw the conclusion that Norton would have got KO'd by any big puncher in history. The truth is, Shavers and Foreman were too of the biggest punchers EVER.
Lennox Lewis - Phil Jackson
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Sonny's jab, . I still haven't seen this fight. One of the few Lewis fights I've missed. How did Lewis perform ? Sonny's jab said: I still haven't seen this fight. One of the few Lewis fights I've missed. How did Lewis perform ? Click to expand... I have never seen it either. I know that doesn't contribute much to this thread, but I have always wondered how good Phil Jackson really was.
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Sonny's jab, . Wills or Langford ? Who rates higher at heavyweight ? Wills should rate far above Langford at HW. His resume is amazing, on resume alone he rates above Dempsey. Arguably Wills was the best HW in the world from 1912-1926 P4P Langford rates higher Wills as my #15 Heavy; Langford #16. I think Langford. The series between them dose not tell the whole story because Langford was on the decline when it started.
Henry Armstrong the greatest fighter p4p of all-time ?
Does anyone here rate Armstrong at number 1 ? How did his fight with Sugar Ray go, and how would he have done against Sugar Ray if he had been at his peak ? The only knock on Armstrong I can see is he lacked longevity in the sense that his peak only lasted 3 or 4 years at the most. But I reckon he made up for this with an incredible level of activity. His accomplishments are almost unparalleled. Holding the feather, welter and light championship all at the same time beggars belief.

George "Scrap Iron" Johnson
Scrap Iron took Frazier apart that night. Frazier could not figure him out. When the decision was announced that Frazier won there was a riot. Chairs thrown, bottles tossed, people hurt, ambulances arrived. Years later, shortly after Frazier retired, he was asked at a news conference who his toughest opponent was. Every media guy in attendance knew he would say Ali but Frazier said "my toughest opponent was Scrap Iron Johnson years ago in LA".
Tyson was even with Douglas on the cards, going into the 10th...
ChrisPontius said: I remembered the judges to have the fight closer than it was, but i didn't know it was this travesty of a scoring: Larry Rozadilla: (88-82 Douglas) Ken Morita: (87-86 Tyson) Masakazu Uchida: (86-86) As i remember, i gave the 6th by a small margin to Tyson (mostly because Douglas was taking a break). And Tyson him down in the 8th. Other than that, Douglas beat the living **** out of Tyson in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 9th. That would make it 87-82 for Douglas.
'Smokin' Joe Frazier (March 8, 1971) vs. 'The Brown Bomber' Joe Louis (Sept 24, 1935)
So savage was Frazier's attack against Ali that night in the garden that a famous sportswrite described him as fighting like - A wild beast caught in a thicket. Frazier was never the same again. The mental and physical toll of that New York evening stays with Frazier till this very day. It was one of the absolute greatest battles in history and Frazier fought brilliantly as did Ali. But Frazier clearly won although suffering the more residual damage as evidenced by later fights.
How far could Cooper of gone?
Bert, that is. What did he lack that kept him from being more than he was? When he was on, the man was dangerous to literally anyone during the time he boxed. Holyfield, Moorer, DeWitt, McCall... Multiple fighters who've been in there with numerous huge punchers said Cooper hit them the hardest. I think some people forget Cooper fought at well under 200 pounds at the beginning of his career. How much did his weight issues keep him back?
Mike Tyson vs Joe Frazier
I don't think that this would be a Foreman style blowout. Tysons reach is actualy shorter than Fraziers so he would have to stand within convenient punching distence to land unlike Foreman. There is also a big question about how Tyson would handel Fraziers infighting technique. If Frazier goes under and gets inside on Tyson (who was esentialy a mid range fighter) can Mike adapt to it? Frazier generaly needed a couple of rounds to warm up to his task but it is not a universal rule.
How bad was Joe Louis's opposition ?

Foreman versus Crawford Grimsley
I wouldn't exactly say that Foreman disgraced THE HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE. He was holding the WBU version which I'm not even sure was viewed as much of a title back in those days. I saw that fight, but don't remember much about it. Foreman was around 47 or 48 years old at the time and fighting an undefeated fighter who had knocked out 18 out of 20 of his opponents. Albeit, it was a padded record but still. It was a rather one sided win.
