Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Define job...

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. When I was writing never-completed stories at the ambitious age of 9.

How is social media changing news?

One word: ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Tintin was my first love. Mikael Blomkvist is badass. And I had a tiny girl crush on Rory Gilmore.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

You're recording history, real-time. Readers pay for your sense of judgement.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Notepad, ballpoint pen, and cramped fingers. Occasionally, I tot around my Nikon D5000.

What's your favorite social network?

I'm wary of all social networks, but Twitter so far takes the cake.

Who do you wish followed you?

Kim Jong Un. Kidding, sort of.

Why did you become a journalist?

It's an intellectual, emotional and social mind-sharpener-- I'm always learning! I can't imagine doing something else.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yup! I worked as an entertainment editor.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Think critically, seek curiously, interact compassionately, write clearly.
