IBM and Samsung top US patent list in 2019
IBM inventors received a record 9,262 U.S. patents in 2019, a 2 per cent increase from 2018, making it the company to secure the most patents annually for the 27th consecutive year, according to the 2019 IFI Top 50. Australian IBM inventors received 167 patents and almost half of the patents IBM received are directly connected to advancing growth in four areas. These include AI, blockchain, cloud computing and security as well as quantum computing.
Silicon Valley firm invests $28 million in Newcastle-based Pegasus
Newcastle-based company Pegasus has secured AU$28 million from the Silicon Valley technology investment firm Accel-KKR to grow the business globally. Established in 1998, Pegasus’ software manages the safety of three million workers across 80,000 companies, primarily based in Australia. The funding will be directed towards product development, recruiting more employees and expanding its presence into international markets.

Apple raked in US$1.42 billion in App store sales during holiday season
Consumers spent US$1.42 billion at the App Store between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, a 16 per cent increase from the previous year. Apple revealed that US$386 million was spent on New Year’s Day 2020, up 20 per cent growth from 2019, setting a new record for sales on a single day.
