First TV show to openly mention/discuss menstruation?
December 2, 2024, 9:11pm 1 We’re all familiar with the old canard that Leave it to Beaver was (kind of) the first TV show to portray a toilet (and in those repressed and uptight days, even just showing the tank, as they did, caused much pearl-clutching). When did TV decide to ditch the menstruation taboo? I have vague memories of commercials for pads & tampons back in the early 1970s, but that was advertising, and not show content. Does anyone remember the first show to openly discuss menstruation?
My Huckleberry friend... 🌙
5 Fly Me to the Moon. I’m not very fond of Frank Sinatra’s recordings of it My favorite interpretation, by Ana Caram, was released under the Portuguese title Leva-me pra lua with Portuguese and English lyrics.
Kurt Cobain died 30 years ago today. Do you remember when you heard the news?
6 Although I was not a Kurt Cobain fan, I vividly remember listening to Andy Rooney on 60 Minutes ranting about how he was not worthy of the vast outpouring of grief over his death. The insensitivity of his rant bothered me so much that I wrote a song about it. So while I had barely even heard of Kurt Cobain, his death inspired me to write a song. I will sing it today in his memory. I can’t believe that was thirty years ago. Edit: Wow, I can’t believe the rant was posted while I wrote my post.
Who was the last person to be executed for WWII crimes in Europe?
March 5, 2024, 9:47pm 1 I was wondering who the last Nazi to be executed for war crimes/crimes against humanity was. At first, I thought it was Adolf Eichman in 1961, but then I found the case of Horst Fischer, who was executed in 1966 for his role in the selections of prisoners at Auschwitz. Was there anyone executed for Nazi crimes after Fischer? Thank you in advance. Zev Steinhardt
Well, so much for that furnace
1 Woke up today, and it was cold in the house. Not just cool, but downright cold. I checked the thermostat, and the temp inside the house was 11C (52F). Not comfortable at the best of times, but especially now that we’re suffering through a cold snap, with temps below -25C (-13F) and colder outside. I called a repair place, and they sent a technician out. The news was not good. The furnace had reached the end of its life.
A murder mystery plot twist I've never seen (possibly open spoilers)
1 Has there ever been a book, short story, or film, where the detective investigating the murder turned out to be the murderer? Since the very nature of this question involves spoilers, I’ll invite you to use spoiler tags, but anyone who does not want to see spoilers should skip this thread.
"All Bookmarks" Folder in Chrome added to bookmarks bar with latest updates. Removing it is easy
In the Address bar copy and paste or type chrome://flags/#power-bookmarks-side-panel and click enter Change the pull-down to the right from Default to Disabled In the lower right corner click Relaunch That should do it. I hate when companies/developers do shit like this and don’t make it obvious how to turn it off. If you remove the all bookmarks bar, can you restore the other bookmarks folder? That’s my main way to access sites, and I was very frustrated to lose it.
Help identify horror movie from 2000s
Group of young people are in the woods for some reason I can’t remember. They find a rock face with drawings on it that are thousands of years old. Maybe one of them is an archeology student and this is why they’re there. Eventually they meet up with or get attacked by a man and woman seemingly from the time period of the drawing. The survivors seek shelter in a cave, and I think the cave actually turns them into more of those prehistoric people? Maybe? Anyone remember this?
Failing to clear ridiculously low bars
Please assure me I am not alone at this. I mean, you assign yourself some challenge, something small, maybe ridiculously small … and then fail at it any way? Like, well, okay, I’m not in great shape, but I can at least go for a ten minute walk every day? Or, no matter what, I won’t go to bed until I have tidied up my kitchen sink? Maybe, I can’t keep up with everything these days, but at least I’ll read the front page of the newspaper?
Sports surprise of the week: Joe Namath is still alive
FWIW, if his Wikipedia entry is accurate, Namath has actually been sober for most of the last 35 years. It indicates that he quit drinking in 1987 (as it was ruining his marriage), but then started drinking again after his divorce in 2000. After his embarrassing interview with Suzy Kolber in 2003 (during which he was, indeed, drunk), he went into a treatment program, and has apparently been sober since.
Looking for children's picture book from 1960's. Boy's artwork of altered animals that comes to life, like an 8-leg mammal
Looking for vintage children’s picture book, likely from the early-to-mid sixties, I borrowed from our school library in California in 1969. The plot centred around a boy, who I seem to remember was homebound possibly due to an illness, or maybe because of bad weather. He liked to draw animals and then alter their anatomy. These creatures would come to life from his easel and would befriend him.
So who's turning 55 this year?
1 I’ve never been one for marking age milestones - I mean really, 21 and 30 and so on went by barely-remarked - but 55 feels like something a little special, even though it really isn’t. Sure, now I can move into 55+ communities (woo hoo!), but otherwise I’m not sure why it’s sticking out for me. Maybe because it’s the earliest age where my company pension vests? In any case, 1963 Dopers feel free report in.
Ever blackmail your siblings?
1 It’s a staple of TV and movies: one sibling finds out about wrongdoing by another sibling, and will tell the parents unless they get money/takeover chores/etc. But as a kid, I never blackmailed my sister or vice versa–we were too eager to blab on each other. Did this happen to you as a kid? If so, how long did it last and did the secret get out anyway?
Celebrity "life" pool?
1 I’ve always thought the whole “death pool” thing was kind of, well not just kind of morbid. Has anybody ever thought of turning it on its head? Instead of picking the youngest celebs who you think will die, you pick the oldest ones that you think won’t die. Then you get points based on their age at the end of the year. For instance, if you’d picked Kirk Douglas, who lived, that’s a hundred points. Just an idea.
Escaped python kills 2 kids - something doesn't feel right here.
Yeah… Ever seen a snake eat something? A snake that size, attacking prey the size of 5 year old is not going to be fast or quiet. The snake would have pulled the child around some distance to be able to wrap firmly around the chest, and even then, prey generally has several minutes to struggle. Really, even if a kid was a heavy sleeper, that’s a big thing to not notice in the same room, and it should make enough noise to be heard in other rooms.
Does anyone else here actually enjoy jury duty?
1 I’m scheduled to show up on July 20. I really like it… I get a day off work, get to sit for a few hours and read a book or play around on my laptop while I wait to be called, perhaps get called to a fairly interesting case (it’s happened twice already), then make a decision that actually has some meaning in this world, and to top it off, free lunch and a little bit of money. How can anyone not like it?
How is Suzanne Sommers?
6 From what I recall, her avoiding conventional therapy was originally reported, but was not accurate, and Randi had to correct himself. I have a friend whose mother had cancer, and besides for conventional therapy, went with a diet-based plan called The Hallelujah Diet, from some Christian guy named Malkmus IIRC.
