THE LAST GAMES of the season are here!!!
Whilst the 1st XV season has finished, we still have two games left as this Saturday the 2nd and 3rd XV play their final round of the season. Both of this weekend's fixtures are a repeat of the opening round, the 2nd XV hosting Hemel Hempstead hoping to avenge a heavy opening day defeat and likewise for the mighty 3s who make the trip to Bedfordshire to take on high flying Biggleswade, themselves needing a win this weekend to secure the Herts Middlesex Merit 4 North East Title.
Where to catch the Saints this weekend
This weekend we have a coach trip, a local derby and an all Herts clash as once again all three teams are in action. The 1st XV are on the road for the first time this year as they travel to North London to take on Finsbury Park. When the two teams met at Boggymead in November Saints prevailed in a close contest 11-10 and they will be looking to complete the double this weekend and extend their current winning run.
The Blue&Gold February Newsletter
I hope you're all well. The shortest month of the year has been and gone and although the league schedule was relatively quiet compared with January, there was still important rugby to be played as we head into the championship rounds of March.
Saints dig deep for victory in the Garden City.
Thanks to Eugene for breaking his match report virginity! St Albans 3rd team looked dishevelled. Only 13 players right up until kick-off when two latecomers finally completed the team. Mis-matched socks and shorts and an array of differently coloured drill tops. But you could tell they were up for it, their faces shone, happy; like council estate kids throwing dog faeces at passing motorists, happy.
Blue & Gold come close in tough conditions in local derby
The game started like any local derby should, a few tickles and hand bags from the first 5 minutes and some ferocious tackles from both sides. It was the newly promoted side who started the better of the 2 teams with a flowing move through all the hands in the backline to score in the corner. The conversion was added. 7-0 Welwyn.10mins.
Same weather, different result: Saints gain revenge for early season draw
Having drawn the away fixture Saints we’re in no mood to oblige again, with every player keen to avenge a sub par performance. Despite a sticky track the Saints got off to a flyer, working their way back up into the Royston 22, Harding slid through a gap, offloaded to Toby ‘Manu’ Sweeney who put Sam Howell through under the sticks.
Fixture Update
We can confirm that the cancelled league fixtures from 18th December have been rescheduled for Saturday 5th February. This means that our 1st XV game away at Tabard will now take place that weekend. Further information will be provided nearer the time and we will keep you updated should there be any further changes.
Whats happening this weekend?
The final league game of 2021 is here and with the 2nd and 3rd XV league already finished for Christmas, all attention turns to our 1st XV as they looked to build on last weekend's impressive victory at home to Cheshunt. It is a big one as the Blue and Gold make the short trip to Radlett to take on Tabard at Cobden Hill. The first fixture between the two teams took place in week two of the season and that afternoon Saints ran out comfortable winners 59-6.
JOCA and St Albans RFC come together.
The club has recently met with Justin Burgess (Welwyn Rugby Club) who set up JOCA (Just One Click Away) five years ago to help and support individuals of all ages who are suffering from anxiety and mental illness. This was after three young players at Welwyn Rugby felt that the pressures of modern life were so great that they sadly took their own lives. JOCA is an established charity and has expanded its reach to many other local rugby clubs in Hertfordshire, Essex and Cambridgeshire.
Stevenage come out on top in the first round of the cup.
Words kindly provided by Chris Jones. The game started hard at a ferocious intensity with strong carries and tackling from each side. Both teams were keen to get the upper hand and were slightly over keen at breakdowns and tackles with a number of infringements at the rucks, questionable handling leading to lots of scrums, and disjointed play.
Saints bounce back to winning ways
Thanks to Tony for the words... After the bitter disappointment of the last gasp penalty against Hitchin, Saints were keen to rediscover the winning ways needed to push for the upper reaches. Harrow kicked off on another balmy October day on a fantastic deck. Woollard, Webb, Boost to Satchell, and within 1-minute saints we 7 - 0 up. The start everyone was looking for. Harrow responded with a penalty of their own but Saints took full control of the first half.
Walkover win leads to a Fullers friendly
Thank you to Fraser for the words... On a sunny Autumn Saturday afternoon, it was a mix of fortunes for St Albans 3rd XV as they hosted a strong Fullerians outfit. The weekend began at Friday lunchtime when original league opponents Enfield Ignations pulled out of the scheduled fixture at late notice, handing the Blue and Gold five points and a 25-0 walkover win. The result kept them joint top of the table but without a game having worked hard to field a team.
Last gasp penalty denies Saints
Saints travelled north on Saturday to take on league leaders Hitchin for the first meeting between the two sides since the 2019 Presidents Trophy Final. That afternoon Saints were victorious with a last gasp try, whilst Hitchin where promoted as Champions of Herts Middlesex One after dominating the league throughout the season. This season both sides have made a strong start and were unbeaten going into the game.

Presidential performance in front of the Vice Presidents
Saints found the next level of performance on a pristine track at Boggymead this Saturday afternoon. In front of a partisan VP crowd, well oiled from a flowing bar (and customary cheese board) the Saints ran in 9 unanswered tries. Tabard played with pride and tough shoulders as they kept going until the last but ultimately ran out of steam on the kind of afternoon we’ve all missed so much over these recent times.
At last... the season is HERE!
So it is finally here... after what feels like the longest off-season EVER, the wait for league rugby is over, and we're back. And the blue and gold kick off with not one but two local derbies!! This weekend's fixtures look like this: 1st XV - Welwyn (A) - Hobbs Way, AL8 6HX. 2nd XV - Hemel Hempstead (Camelot) (A) - Chaulden Lane, HP1 2BS.

The Blue & Gold July 2021 Newsletter
By Fraser Morris Hi all, I hope everyone is well. The summer of sport rolls on this month, the football ended in disappointment for England as they lost another penalty shoot out, this time in the Euro final to Italy. Their success at the European Championships capped off a remarkable change of fortunes for the Italians, after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, they have since gone on a two and a half year winning streak culminating in them lifting the trophy a fortnight ago.
