Stan Abbott is an experienced newspaper and magazine journalist and publisher based in the North of England. He began his journalistic career in provincial newspapers in York, Darlington and Bradford before going freelance as editor of the hang gliding magazine, Wings!. He was a regular feature writer for national newspapers and magazines, inlcuding The Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The Observer, The Daily Telegraph and The New Statesman, and was a sub-editor for both the Yorkshire Post and Northern Echo.
He established Leading Edge Press & Publishing, which published a list of more than 50 mostly non-fiction titles from its base in the Yorkshire Dales, including its popular RailTrail series and a number of books on transport issues.
Stan has edited many magazines and newspapers, including National Parks Today, NHS Magazine, Enjoying the Countryside and Med LIfe (for GB Airways). He has published inflight magazines for other airlines, inlcluding Gill Airways and Eastern Airways, the latter in both English and French. He is fluent in French and has also published titles in Welsh, Icelandic and Norwegian.
After some years working in international airline marketing and then running his own marketing business, Stan has returned to full-time journalism and authorship, the latter under the name of Stan L. Abbott. His non-fiction titles include To Kill a Railway, The Line That Refused to Die, Walking the Line (2021), and Ring of Stone Circles (2022). HIs book Settle & Carlisle: The Enduring Life of the People's Railway, is due out later in 2022.
His novel, The Episode, deals with mental health issues and was published to critical acclaim in 2019. He has a second novel part-written and is looking for an agent.
Stan writes regularly for The New European newspaper on subjects including islands, human landscapes and aviation, as well as for a variety of outdoor publications. He is Chairman of the Outdoor Writers & Photographers Guild and a life member of the National Union of Journalists.
He hopes to be able to relaunch Eastern Airways inflight magazine once the airline indsutry has recovered more fully from the impacts of COVID.
Stan teaches creative writing through an adulat education centre in North Yorkshire and speaks regularly at literary and other events. He is based in the City of Durham and near Keswick, in the English Lake District.
