Future 6G radio-access network & design choices
Over the last couple of years, 5G networks have been rapidly deployed across the world, offering unprecedented capabilities. The uptake of 5G has been much faster than the uptake of 4G a decade ago and 5G will continue to evolve for many years to come. Nevertheless, to meet future expectations, work on the next-generation cellular networks – commonly referred to as 6G – is already ongoing, targeting deployments in 2030 and beyond.
6G standardization - a technology marathon
6G is entering the pre-standardization phase. At the end of 2023, 3GPP committed to the development of the sixth-generation mobile system. To solidify the commitment, a timeline for 6G standardization was decided at the March 2024 3GPP meetings in Maastricht, the Netherlands. Ericsson is ready to support 3GPP’s ambition to be the main specification body for 6G, as it has been for earlier generations.

CM-wave spectrum: 6G's potent enabler
6G services that need additional spectrum There is no dispute that 5G is a revolutionary technology, enabling seamless communication from machine to machine, as well as machine to human. By 2030, it will have shaped both industry and society for a decade. We will have witnessed the emergence of many new applications and services, while learning invaluable lessons from every 5G deployment.
Zero-energy devices: a new opportunity in 6G
Today’s massive machine-type communication provides data rates of up to a few hundred kilobits per second. NarrowBand Internet of Things (NB-IoT) and LTE for Machines (LTE-M) are two closely related technologies that are used in today’s commercial 4G and 5G networks to handle applications such as remote meter reading. Although the battery life of NB-IoT/LTE-M devices can be up to ten years in some cases, battery replacement or charging limits the applicability of these devices.
5G NR – Behind the Scenes | SciTech Connect
OFDM, ultra-lean, mini-slots, beam-centric, ….these are just some of the many words and acronyms being used in conjunction with 5G and it is easy to get lost among all the terms and technology components. We believe our recently released book 5G NR: The Next Generation Wireless Access Technology, explaining the technologies behind this new standard and the reason for including them, fills an important need for those interested in NR.
