CBoTB: Beer Flights
One of the cool aspects of most brewery taprooms is that there are a lot of different beers on draft. Whether you’ve been drinking craft beer for years, or you’re new to this wonderful world, an awesome way to begin your afternoon or evening in a taproom is with a beer flight. A beer flight features, typically, four to six different beers, presented on a wooden tray, board, or paddle, with the craft beers presented from light in color to dark.
CBoTB- Deep Fake Non-Alcoholic Beer
Last Friday, I received an unexpected piece of mail here at the radio station: a three-inch high, 12-inch square box. When I opened it, I found another box inside and was pleasantly surprised to see the Flying Dog Brewery logo on the front. The box’s cover had the words “Flying Dog Beer Fairy. You’re the first to try the beer inside.” And the box side said “Lift here for Disobedient Beer”. And so I did. I lifted the flap and found two 12-ounce cans of Flying Dog beer! The beer?

CBoTB: Profile: Joe Gold, from Lacrosse to Beer - Part II
Last week, in Part I of this profile on Baltimore beer legend Joe Gold, Joe shared the story of his journey to England in the early 80’s to teach lacrosse, his immersion in the British beer culture and the events that led to his coming back to Baltimore as the Import Manager for Young’s Brewery in late 1986. But lacrosse was never far away. Just after moving home to Baltimore, Joe was chosen to be part of a newly formed indoor professional lacrosse league.

As I’ve traveled through my craft beer journey, I’ve had the opportunity to meet some amazing people in the craft beer industry. One of those amazing people is Joe Gold, an integral part of the craft beer culture in Baltimore for almost 30 years! Joe Gold grew up in Baltimore, attending UMBC as a Fine Arts major with an Education minor and a mad passion for lacrosse.

So of course, in honor Cicada Week on The Bay, he’s not going to turn down the chance to do a taste test of….cicada-cookies? Check out his reaction as he crunches right into that first bite! Thanks to our friends at Oregon Ridge Park for whipping up these delicacies!

CBoTB: Ten Eyck Brewing
Back in mid-November, I received a phone call from a Scott Campbell asking if I’d consider doing a Craft Beer on The Bay feature on Ten Eyck Brewing, a new craft brewery in Queenstown. I asked Scott if he was one of the owners and he said that he was a contractor who was part of the team that built the brewery. He then told me that he was at the taproom and the brewer was with him and introduced me to Nicki Sener, the Founder and Head Brewer at Ten Eyck Brewing.
CBoTB-Profile: Bob Simko, now at The R-Bar at R-House
The craft beer industry is filled with so much great talent: brewers, owners, servers, managers, sales people and… well, the list goes on. What all of these people have in common is a deep love for craft beer! My craft beer journey has led me to many places and given me the opportunity to meet so many really good people. One of those “really good people” is Bob Simko, one of the most passionate craft beer enthusiasts I know, in any aspect of the industry.
CBoTB: Maine Blueberry Ale from UFO
About five years ago, a trend began in craft brewing where brewers were beginning to offer beers that were unfiltered—beers where the yeast is intentionally left in the beer. The appeal of these unfiltered, or hazy, beers went beyond the change in appearance of the beer; the unfiltered yeast particles added new, interesting and fascinating flavors to the beer.
CBoTB: Double Mind Haze from Firestone Walker
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Firestone Walker Brewing Company, an outstanding brewery located in Paso Robles, California. Adam Firestone and David Walker, two brothers-in-law in Los Olivos, California, took their shared passion for beer and founded Firestone Walker Brewing in 1996. Then because of the exceptional quality of their beers and the associated demand, Firestone Walker moved into a larger space in Paso Robles in 2001 and brought on Matt Brynildson as their Brewmaster.
CBoTB: Hopkins Farm Brewer-Part III
This week, in Part III of the Hopkins Farm Brewery story, Co-Founder and Brewmaster, Aaron Hopkins, tells us about the construction of the brewery, the Hopkins Farm Brewery team and, of course, some of the beers! The story picks up in 2018 when Aaron, his father, David Hopkins, and his uncle, Dan Hopkins, decided to explore starting a farm brewery in Havre de Grace. The first step was to meet with Harford County and have a candid conversation about the actual feasibility of their plan.
CBoTB: Hopkins Farm Brewery-Part II
Last week, Hopkins Farm Brewery Co-Founder and Brewmaster, Aaron Hopkins, told us about the beginning days of his brewing career where a book-signing event with Dogfish Head Brewing’s Sam Caligione led him to seriously contemplate a career in brewing. Then, not long afterwards, a lunch with DuClaw Brewing’s Dave Benfield led to a brewery tour and an unexpected opportunity to begin volunteer work at DuClaw.
…The Light is Shining Brighter: By Colleen Carew
…The light is shining brighter! I thought I’d fill up this space with some recreational positivity. It seems that over the past 12 months all we’ve been hearing about is closings, cancellations and postponements.
CBoTB: Hopkins Farm Brewery - Part I
A little over four years ago, while visiting Phil Rhudy at Independent Brewing Company in Bel Air, I met Aaron Hopkins, Independent’s head brewer at the time. During our conversation, Phil and Aaron talked about Aaron’s new business: Chesapeake Malting Company, a soon-to-be supplier of malt to Maryland breweries! Not long after that meeting, Aaron left Independent Brewing and opened Chesapeake Malting along with his father.
CBoTB: Ballast Point Brewing
It was the summer of 2012, about a year after I started working at 100.7 The Bay, and I got a call from a friend from San Diego who was planning a trip to Baltimore and wanted to see if had time to hang out for an afternoon and show him some of the town. As it turned out, the timing of his trip was perfect: on the open day for his visit, the Orioles were playing a day-game at Camden Yards so I immediately bought tickets for the game.
CBoTB: Profile: Oliver Brewing's Head Brewer, Steve Jones-Part I
Oliver Brewing has been brewing beer in Baltimore for 28 years, the longest operating craft brewery in Maryland. I spent some time with Steve Jones, Oliver Brewing’s Head Brewer, and talked about his career, from his start in England to moving to the States to brew here in Baltimore. Steve then left the University of Warwick in Coventry, England and took a job as a guitar tech with a friend’s band who had just started touring. When the band stopped touring, Steve Jones needed a job.

CBoTB: Evolution Craft Brewing
Let’s zoom back 13 years. It’s late 2008 on the Eastern Shore, near Salisbury, and rumors are circulating that a craft brewery might be opening. This was especially big news then. The Salisbury/Ocean City area had no craft breweries in 2008. But that was all about to change. Tommy and Johnny Knorr were, indeed, building a craft brewery and in so doing, realizing a dream.
CBoTB: St. Patrick's Day at Sean Bolan's
As we are so well aware, a year and a day ago, the spread of the coronavirus disease was declared a pandemic. Over the following days, weeks and, ultimately, months our world kept changing. Along the way we learned a lot, fighting through misinformation, confusion and ultimately seeing that there were ways we could manage our lives and take care of our fellow man. Now, as we enter the second year of battling COVID-19, there is hope.
CBoTB: Oliver Brewing's Head Brewer, Steve Jones-Part II
Last week, Oliver Brewing’s Steve Jones, filled us in on how he got started in brewing and then, ultimately, became the Head Brewer for Oliver. In this Part II on Steve’s career, Steve tells us about brewing at Oliver’s original site on Pratt Street and then the move to their brewery and taproom on Shannon Drive in Baltimore.

Gunpowder Falls Brewing in New Freedom, Pennsylvania features exclusively beers brewed in classic German styles.
CBoTB: Stouts
While it’s hard to know exactly what St. Patrick’s Day will be like this year, it’s still a day to celebrate life! And this year, like every year, I start thinking about the day and buying Guinness Draught, the Guinness beer that most people associate with the brewery, for enjoying at home. There are many different styles of stout and almost all are black in color. Here’s a snapshot of the five most common styles. Guinness Draught falls into the Dry Stout category.

Well, here we are in the dead of winter with sub-freezing temperatures, bitter cold winds, and snow in the forecast. So how do we stay warm? BLOG: February Sucks…but does it have to?
February Sucks…… but does it have to? Here we are, in the dead of winter. Usually, this time of year we start “thinking Spring”, looking forward to Opening Day, and planning our summer vacations. However, while 2021 is still attached to the uncertainty of 2020, it’s hard to do anything but plan what you’re making for dinner.
CBoTB: A Brief Look at Baltimore's Brewing History
Craft beer’s explosive popularity is being driven by people of all ages with one thing in common: a desire to drink amazing beer. The tremendous variations on each style, by each brewer, has made the craft beer experience an incredible adventure. Craft breweries have differentiated themselves from the large production national breweries because of the vast variety they offer and the complexity in the aroma and taste of these beers that are truly crafted.

CBoTB: Mixed Six Packs
A few weeks ago, just before Christmas, 100.7 The Bay’s Colleen Carew surprised me with a Christmas gift of a mixed six-pack of beer. As I was looking through the selection, it reminded me of the early days of my craft beer journey when I did this kind of thing on a regular basis. Putting together a mixed-six gives us the chance to try new beers without committing to a full six-pack of one beer.
CBoTB: Troegs Independent Brewing - Mad Elf Ale
Last year, right around this time, I visited Troeg’s Independent Brewing in Hershey and met with Co-Founders, John and Chris Trogner and in a wide ranging conversation, talked about their careers, the brewery’s history, their beers and their team. Now that we are well into the holiday season, I thought it would be the right time to revisit that meeting and put the spotlight on Mad Elf Ale, their amazing Christmas Ale, and talk about their process for developing recipes. First recipes.
CBoTB: Anchor Brewing's 2020 Christmas Ale
Back in the early days of my craft beer journey, I discovered a few breweries that were making beer specifically for the Holiday Season. And since that moment, I’ve made a point of drinking almost nothing but Holiday inspired beers during this time of the year.

Let's Get It Done in 2021…by Colleen Carew
I know we have a couple more weeks before we say “SEE YA!” to this helluva year, but is this the year we get a reprieve from making Resolutions? Instead, would a list of “intentions” make more sense? Well, according to research, 7 in 10 Americans plan to toss out their materialistic New Year’s resolutions for 2021 and, instead, focus on life skills or practical goals.
CBoTB: Great Lakes Brewing
It was late September last year and I got an unexpected piece of good news about craft beer! Cleveland’s Great Lakes Brewing was going to begin distribution in Maryland! I first learned of Great Lakes Brewing in 2003 when I was living in the Philadelphia area and found out about their Christmas Ale, an ale that sounded so good that I got a case delivered to my home.
