415. Neurodevelopmental Changes in Synaptic Density: Preliminary Data from a Longitudinal Pet Study With [18F]SynVesT-1 in Treatment-Seeking Youth
Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, University of Toronto
Investigating cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between brain structure and distinct dimensions of externalizing psychopathology in the ABCD sample | Neuropsychopharmacology
Abstract Externalizing psychopathology in childhood is a predictor of poor outcomes across the lifespan. Children exhibiting elevated externalizing symptoms also commonly show emotion dysregulation and callous-unemotional (CU) traits. Examining cross-sectional and longitudinal neural correlates across dimensions linked to externalizing psychopathology during childhood may clarify shared or distinct neurobiological vulnerability for psychopathological impairment later in life.
88. Atypical Resting-State Electroencephalogram Theta-Beta Ratio in Autistic Adults: Preliminary Results
Resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) theta/beta spectral power ratio (TBR) is a proposed neurophysiological biomarker of cognitive processing in neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions. Among neurodevelopmental conditions, an elevated resting-state TBR has been associated with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with likely prognostic significance.
Disrupted maturation of white matter microstructure after concussion is associated with internalizing behavior scores in female children
Abstract Some children, particularly females, who experience concussions develop long-lasting emotional and behavioral problems. Establishing the potential contribution of pre-existing behavioral problems and disrupted white matter maturation has been challenging due to a lack of pre-injury data.

Differential association of antioxidative defense genes with white matter integrity in youth bipolar disorder - Translational Psychiatry
Abstract Oxidative stress is associated with white matter diffusion metrics in adults with bipolar disorder (BD). We examined the association of single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the oxidative stress system, superoxide dismutase-2 (SOD2) rs4880 and glutathione peroxidase-3 (GPX3) rs3792797 with fractional anisotropy (FA) and radial diffusivity (RD) in youth with BD. Participants included 104 youth (age 17.5 ± 1.7 years; 58 BD, 46 healthy controls).
Positron Emission Tomography in the Neuroimaging of Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Review
Autism Spectrum Disorder Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by persistently impaired social interactions and interpersonal communication, limited, repetitive, and stereotyped behaviors, and a significantly limited range of interests and activities. In 2013, the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) revolutionized the diagnostic criteria for ASD (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
Middle‐childhood executive functioning mediates associations between early‐childhood autism symptoms and adolescent mental health, academic and functional outcomes in autistic children
Abstract Background Executive functioning (EF) varies in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and is associated with clinical symptoms, academic, and adaptive functioning. Here, we examined whether middle-childhood EF mediates associations between early-childhood autism symptoms and adolescent outcomes in children with ASD.
Social Cognitive Performance in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders Compared With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review, Meta-analysis, and Meta-regression | Autism Spectrum Disorders | JAMA Psychiatry | JAMA Network
Key Points Question How do deficits in social cognition diverge or overlap between individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD)? Findings In this systematic review and meta-analysis of 36 studies directly comparing social cognitive performance in individuals with SSDs vs ASD, there were no statistically significant differences in emotion processing or theory of mind.
Not suicide. Not today.
Personalized Care By examining how mental illness and suicidal ideation affects individuals as well as populations, we’re working toward a model of personalized care to provide patients with more compassionate, effective treatment. We engage in research with patients, caregivers and the myriad of different communities we serve. We generate knowledge to understand how age, sex, diagnosis, symptoms, biology and other factors affect the course of illness.
Heterogeneity Within and Between Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Challenge or Opportunity?

Doctors' Notes: New brain imaging data points to better treatments for autism and ADHD | Toronto Star
Imagine if we could use data from a brain image to diagnose autism or ADHD. Or if we could use that same image to predict the right treatment. Right now, we diagnose autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) based on information about a person’s experiences and behaviours that fit a textbook definition.
