What was your first job as a journalist?

Freelancer, I've always been a freelancer, unofficial, mostly op-ed writer

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Hunter S. Thompson because Ibogaine, and also, I'm from Vegas

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To be a real-time historian and one of the last watch dogs of democracy

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did not. I dropped out of high school, but I always wrote.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't ask for permission, just go for it (in terms of pitching, not making up facts)

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

When I was working as an acquisitions editor at a Young Adult Press someone pitched a novel that was written from the perspective of a colon

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Kweli Journal, voices from the diaspora which are lacking in mainstream media and the literary journal scene
