Role of the Perfluoro Effect in the Selective Photochemical Isomerization of Hexafluorobenzene
Hexafluorobenzene and many of its derivatives exhibit a chemoselective photochemical isomerization, resulting in highly strained, Dewar-type bicyclohexenes. While the changes in absorption and emission associated with benzene hexafluorination have been attributed to the so-called “perfluoro effect”, the resulting electronic structure and photochemical reactivity of hexafluorobenzene is still unclear.

Symmetry Breaking Charge Transfer as a Means to Study Electron Transfer With No Driving Force.
Symmetry Breaking Charge Transfer as a Means to Study Electron Transfer With No Driving Force. Micheal Kellog, Ali Akil, Daniel Sylvinson M. R., Laura Estergreen, Stephen Bradforth and Mark Thompson Abstract Symmetry breaking charge transfer (SBCT) is a process where a symmetrically disposed pair of identical chromophores forms a charge transfer excited state with the hole and electron on different chromophores, i.e. chr-chr +h chr+-chr .

Electronic structure of aqueous solutions: Bridging the gap between theory and experiments
Predicting the electronic properties of aqueous liquids has been a long-standing challenge for quantum mechanical methods. However, it is a crucial step in understanding and predicting the key role played by aqueous solutions and electrolytes in a wide variety of emerging energy and environmental technologies, including battery and photoelectrochemical cell design.
University learning: Improve undergraduate science education
Undergraduate students are not being taught science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects as well as they need to be1. Too often, faculty members talk at students rather than engaging them in activities that help them to learn and apply core scientific concepts and skills.
