Reflections on Generative AI in Academic Writing
lightsource/Depositphotos AI has been a revolutionary tool for all those who communicate ideas. It has also revolutionised how people access information, and impacted some of the ways that people learn. Going into mainstream use in November 2022 with the rollout of OpenAI’s prompt-based generative text tool Chat GPT, an expanded landscape soon opened into view, incorporating generated speech, imagery, video and more. We all now live in that world, and for publishers it has been quite a challenge.

Iran’s Nuclear Ambitions under the Shah and Ayatollahs: Strikingly Analogous but More Dangerous
The Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear program has been an ever-present vexation in Western political discourse since its full extent was first revealed in 2002. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), United Nations Security Council, United States of America, European Union, and Israel have employed an ever-widening and steadily-strengthening combination of negotiations, sanctions, and threats in attempts to rein in Iran’s atomic ambitions.
Introducing the Major International Relations Theories
This is an excerpt from McGlinchey, Stephen. 2022. Foundations of International Relations (London: Bloomsbury). International Relations theory allows us to ask questions of our history, our present, and even gain insights into our future. It gives us a toolkit that forms an essential part of International Relations as an academic discipline. This extract from Foundations of International Relations (McGlinchey 2022) is designed with three objectives.
Human Rights and Sovereignty
This case study is an excerpt from McGlinchey, Stephen. 2022. Foundations of International Relations (London: Bloomsbury). During the Second World War, Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime that had ruled Germany since 1933 had been discovered to have undertaken a programme of exterminating Jews and other unwanted peoples such as homosexuals, political opponents and the disabled.
Marxism, Poststructuralism and Warfare
This case study is an excerpt from McGlinchey, Stephen. 2022. Foundations of International Relations (London: Bloomsbury). Marxists believe that war is one of the many tools utilised by capitalists to ensure their power persists by maintaining the status quo in a world where rich states continue to dominate the weak. For example, Marxists would argue that the United States-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 was a disguised attempt to control Iraq through the economic seizure and exploitation of its oil.
Postcolonialism, Feminism and the United Nations
This case study is an excerpt from McGlinchey, Stephen. 2022. Foundations of International Relations (London: Bloomsbury). Whereas most media and general coverage of the United Nations paints it as a well-intentioned international organisation, critical theories (as their description would suggest) offer a more nuanced take.
Constructivism and the United Nations
This case study is an excerpt from McGlinchey, Stephen. 2022. Foundations of International Relations (London: Bloomsbury). From a theoretical point of view, the effectiveness and utility of the United Nations differs depending on which perspective we choose to adopt. Liberals tend to have faith in the capacity of international organisations, primarily the United Nations, to uphold the framework of global governance.
Mega Dams and the Narmada River
This case study is an excerpt from McGlinchey, Stephen. 2022. Foundations of International Relations (London: Bloomsbury). Damming a moving body of water, such as a river, slows down and materially changes the flow and the landscape around it. It can also create a large area of water behind the dam (a manmade lake, or series of lakes), which is managed in different ways.
Realism, Liberalism and War
This case study is an excerpt from McGlinchey, Stephen. 2022. Foundations of International Relations (London: Bloomsbury). Realists and liberals are divided when it comes to understanding why war exists, and what can be done about it. Realists believe it is an ever-present ‘feature’ of our system as international anarchy drives conflict because security is scarce. As a result, states look to acquire territory, resources or to eradicate/absorb a competitor to enable them to feel more secure.
Regulating Nuclear Weapons
This case study is an excerpt from McGlinchey, Stephen. 2022. Foundations of International Relations (London: Bloomsbury). The quest to regulate nuclear weapons offers a glimpse of interactions between states that were sworn enemies and had had little in common due to incompatible economic and political systems. Yet, through diplomacy and the influence of the United Nations, were able to avoid war and find ways to achieve progress in the most critical of areas.
Global Politics in a Post-Truth Age – E-International Relations
9,504 Downloads Amazon (US, UK, CA, DE, FR) And all good book stores This book brings together ten chapters that reflect upon the state of global, regional and national politics in the twenty-first century within the context of post-truth. The Oxford Dictionary’s definition of post-truth describes it as circumstances in which facts are less influential in shaping public opinion and political action than emotion, belief and distortion.
International Relations and the Global System
This is an excerpt from McGlinchey, Stephen. 2022. Foundations of International Relations (London: Bloomsbury). The world today may seem to be in disarray. However, by historical standards, it is actually relatively orderly and fixed into place. Those that were born in the early part of the last century lived (if they were fortunate enough to survive) through a global pandemic, a global recession and two world wars. Life in prior centuries was even more perilous.
