What was your first job as a journalist?

Columnist for Big Issue Cymru.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, many years ago.

How is social media changing news?

It is making news more immediate and less in the control of the mainstream media. With social media anyone can contribute to news stories.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Clark Kent

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means always seeing potential stories from all sorts of people and places.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I prefer pitches to be about subjects that I feel help make a difference.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Mac Mini, Canon camera and camcorder, notebooks.

Why did you become a journalist?

Because writing comes easily to me and I love to share information.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, but I started writing poetry and songs, after getting inspired by Bob Dylan.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A full page feature about monarch butterflies that I was asked to write by the editor of the defunct Tenerife Sun.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't give up and look for stories in your daily life. Think about how you can use situations and subjects you encounter.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

To write about foraging throughout the seasons. I wrote a commissioned series for Permaculture Magazine.

What's your favorite drink?

Green tea

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Out walking.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

National Geographic.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That I only write about subjects I am familiar with and interested in.
