Subterranean Warfare - An Urgent DoW Need Without An Owner
The DoW urgently needs to organize its scattered subterranean warfare assets into a single unified organization. Ideally, a Direct Reporting Portfolio Manager (DRPM) for Subterranean Warfare, reporting to the Deputy Secretary of War. (The Department already uses this model for unmanned systems, critical weapons and Golden Dome.) This group would have three portfolios: Subterranean Resilience, Subterranean Sensing and Subterranean Defeat.

AI Killed The MVP – Long Live The IUP
Steve Blank: “We want students to use AI to the max, just like in the real world. But AI has changed the world in which entrepreneurs will create new companies” Editor’s note: Second of a four-part series. The Year AI Came For Us: Teaching Entrepreneurship Will Never Be The Same
“Lean startup” pioneer Steve Blank: “Students used AI instead of customers for insights and validation. And because this information came from AI, they assumed it was correct. AI made it easier and faster for students to translate ideas into products – but they had no idea if this AI product met a customer need or solved a customer’s problem” Editor’s note: First of a four-part series. Part 2 will be published Sept. 24.
When the shofar is silent: A Rosh Hashanah message for all of us
There are moments when the calendar itself seems to speak. This year, as we remember Sept. 11 and approach Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, the Sabbath adds its own sacred message. Three themes come together: memory, renewal and peace. Sept. 11 asks us to remember. We remember nearly 3,000 lives lost, families forever changed, first responders who ran toward danger, and ordinary people who discovered extraordinary courage. But we should also remember Sept. 12. For a brief time, America felt different.
Gold Coast Arts Center enters new decade meeting new challenges
The Gold Coast Arts Center was born from founder and executive director Regina Gil’s imagination but very soon captured the imagination of the community. In 1989, then-State Assemblyman Tom DiNapoli (now NYS Comptroller) obtained $10,000 in seed money for Gil to develop a plan to realize her vision of an arts center, which began in the basement of St. Paul’s Church.
Tom Suozzi column: A promise to listen
The Democratic Socialists of America platform is dangerous and unworkable. To address the affordability problem and deep anxiety in our country, the Democrats must lay out a clear path forward that fixes what’s not working in America today. With that in mind, I worked with U.S. Rep. Adam Gray (D-CA) to develop the Promise to America. Adam and I were the only two Democrats in 2024 to flip congressional districts that Donald Trump had won.
The trust equation: Why people choose you before you ever open your mouth
Trust is not built during the transaction. Trust is built before the transaction. People decide whether they trust you long before you explain anything, diagnose anything, or recommend anything.
A government of by and for…the wealthy
The completion of the East River Tunnel in 1910 opened a new world of opportunities for the wealthy executives working in Manhattan. Instead of taking the train to Brooklyn, then transferring to a ferry that crossed the narrow gap into Manhattan, one could now get from Long Island to Manhattan with a single ticket on the Long Island Rail Road. A new commuter class was born. Many were upwardly mobile bankers, engineers, or businessmen who had enough money to splurge on a house outside the city.
Nassau residents watch United States survive red card, beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0
Roughly 8,000 fans packed the lawn at Eisenhower Park on Wednesday, July 1 for Nassau County’s second free World Cup watch party. The United States men’s national team rewarded them with a 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, advancing to the Round of 16 despite playing the final half hour with 10 men. The event, part of the county’s “Soccer In The Park” series with The Island FC, was built on the success of a June 19 watch party that drew 6,700 fans for the Americans’ win over Australia.

Triumph returns for a 50th anniversary victory lap
As one of Canada’s greatest hard rock exports, Triumph is a band whose legacy was missed by an entire generation of music fans. While the power trio of Rik Emmett, Mike Levine and Gil Moore enjoyed a heyday that ran between 1975 and 1993, vocalist/guitarist Emmett dipped out in 1988 over creative and business differences. But that legacy will be revisited in earnest when Triumph pulls into Nikon at Jones Beach on June 5 with its “Rock & Roll Machine Reloaded” Tour.
Focus on the Great Neck Peninsula: Celebrating EMS Week
When normal drivers see flashing lights and sirens on Middle Neck Road they anxiously pull over. If you’re a first Responder, on the other hand, rushing to an emergency, fire or medical call, it involves a rush of adrenaline, and is a call to action.
Geraldo Rivera Column: Danny Boy
Trump’s epic but substantively disappointing visit to China is over. Everybody is back in the States, and the world is returning to its asymmetric military conflicts. The battle between Iran; Israel and the United States will probably reignite with intense, if not widespread violence. Since Iran is a depleted foe, the jump-started conflict will continue to be one-sided, but with far reaching consequences.
When insurance companies face less accountability, victims pay the price
My 14-year-old son, Ethan, who checked every box a parent would want their child to check, was killed on his way home from a celebratory dinner with his high school tennis team by a driver who was drunk and high and driving on the wrong side of the road. As a father, my heart is broken.

Anthropic Mythos - We’ve Opened Pandora's Box
EXPERT OPINION -- For a decade the cybersecurity community was predicting a cyber apocalypse tied to a single event - the day a Cryptographically Relevant Quantum Computer could run Shor’s algorithm and break the public-key cryptography systems most of the internet runs on. We braced for a one-time shock we would absorb and adapt to. The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) has already published standards for the first set of post-quantum cryptography codes.

PERSPECTIVE: No Place is Safe: How Drone Warfare is Reshaping Military and Infrastructure Protection
Drones in Ukraine and in the War with Iran have made the surface of the earth a contested space. The U.S. has discovered that: 1) Air superiority and missile defense systems (THAAD, Patriot batteries) designed to counter tens or hundreds of aircraft and missiles are insufficient against asymmetric attacks of thousands of drones. 2) Undefended high-value fixed civilian infrastructure – oil tankers, data centers, desalination plants, oil refineries, energy nodes, factories, et al -are all at risk.

Focus on the Great Neck Peninsula: The life and times of Lois A. Schaffer
At 90 years young, longtime Great Neck resident, Lois A. Schaffer is a local treasure, a bon vivant, and a champion of human rights. We discussed the modern tensions between “liberal” versus “traditional” lifestyles in our town and abroad, including her visit to site of the Nova Festival in Israel, post – Oct. 7. Needless to say, we did not solve the Middle East conflict, but we made a small dent. “It comes down to understanding,” she said.
Your Startup Is Probably Dead on Arrival
AI is changing everything from fundraising to business models. If you’re not paying attention to those shifts, you’ll be out of business. If you started a company more than two years ago, it’s likely that many of your assumptions are no longer true. You need to stop coding, building, recruiting, fundraising, etc., and take stock of what changed around you. Or your company will die. I just had coffee with Chris, a startup founder I invested in six years ago.

Revisionist History - Aliens, Secrets and Conspiracies
OPINION – Over a decade ago, I was a public official and was at one of our commission meetings on the coast of California. A fellow commissioner and I decided to take a long lunchtime walk along the coast. As we chatted, we realized we had both worked on several of the same very classified programs. His involvement was in acquisition and finance, while mine was more deeply connected to the engineering development of the project and hands-on with the operators on site.
Geraldo Rivera Column: U.S.A.
It doesn’t compare to the winter suffering of millions in the blizzard-ravaged Midwest and Northeast, but it was bad. I just saw steamy “Wuthering Heights” sitting next to my mother-in-law. Here is how it happened. A fan since college of the tragic 1847 novel by Emily Brontë, and original 1939 film starring Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon, I was less reluctant than usual to see this remake of a tragic romance, so I tagged along with wife Erica, 16-year-old niece Georgia, and Erica’s mom Nancy.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd revisits debut three decades on
By Dave Gil de Rubio Time flies when you’re having fun. It’s hard to believe that when Kenny Wayne Shepherd released “Ledbetter Heights” in 1996, he was an 18-year-old guitarist on the cusp of rejiggering the blues zeitgeist. Fast forward three decades later and the now 48- year-old musician is not only preparing to hit the road to commemorate this milestone anniversary, but is set to release an entirely re-recorded track-by-track version of those songs in May.
A personal reflection on Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr.
The passing of Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. marks the end of a monumental era in American civic and political life. For more than half a century, he stood at the forefront of the struggle for justice, inclusion, and democratic participation. He was not only one of the most prolific and passionate civil rights leaders of our time; he was a strategist, a coalition builder, and a moral voice whose resonance extended far beyond the pulpit. Rev.
Bill O’Reilly Column: The price of rebellion
President Trump is mandated by the Constitution to enforce the laws of the United States. He twice swore an oath to do that. There’s no wiggle room concerning the inaugural oath. The state of Minnesota does not want federal enforcement of immigration law. Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey are publicly defiant; they will not “cooperate” with federal authorities in detaining undocumented immigrants. The result of the defiance is two dead Americans. This is not a difficult analysis.
Beyond the fear of cheating: Why AI literacy is the new calculator
At dinner tables across Great Neck, a new topic has quietly joined the usual conversations about academic success and our children’s future: Artificial Intelligence (AI). Parents are debating tools like ChatGPT with a mix of curiosity and anxiety.
Focus on the Great Neck Peninsula: Say hello to Aldi Supermarket!
A slice of life from the past. Cars, traffic, and post-World War II suburban sprawl led to shopping centers and strips shaping Long Island, including along Great Neck Road and Middle Neck Road. The “North Shore Shopping Mart,” now known as The Gardens shopping center (38 Great Neck Road), emerged during our town’s downtown Main Street transformation, in close proximity to the LIRR.

Sam Grisman Project brings old-time music to Port Washington
Music has always been a cornerstone in Sam Grisman’s life. As one of three children of storied mandolinist David Grisman, the former grew up in a household where jam sessions were the norm and a who’s who of guests, including Vassar Clements, John Hartford and Doc Watson would often swing by to make music and break bread. Along the way, Sam Grisman learned stand-up bass while being exposed to a musical foundation steeped in folk, bluegrass and jazz, which would shape his own creative leanings.

Board President Adam Smith described the process as “fluid and iterative,” stressing that all proposals remain in draft form until a final budget is adopted in April. A preliminary budget is expected in March.
Impending changes for Thomaston residents after board meeting
On Monday, Jan. 12, the Thomaston Board of Trustees met at the village hall for roughly half an hour to discuss upcoming changes for the residents of the village. The board began the public hearing on an amendment to the village code on short-term rental or transient dwellings. This largely affects Airbnbs, which have been strongly rejected by residents in previous hearings. The conversation will be continued at the next hearing on Feb.
Telecaster Master Albert Lee comes to Roslyn
Over the many decades that Albert Lee has been strapping on an axe, he has earned the nickname Mr. Telecaster, a persona he’ll bring to My Father’s Place. As one of England’s pre-eminent country-rock guitarists, Lee has been plugging in with his trusty Fender while being a member of Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band, done a five-year stint as a sideman for Eric Clapton and served as a musical director for more than 20 years with his heroes, The Everly Brothers.
Real estate roundtable Mark Leventhal
2026 is shaping up to be an exciting year in real estate. Suburban and smaller town living continue to attract buyers seeking more space, outdoor amenities, and a higher quality of life, though city markets are bouncing back. Interest rates remain a deciding factor, with buyers carefully timing purchases and sellers adjusting strategies to stay competitive. Technology is changing the game. Virtual tours, AI driven searches, and digital closings make buying and selling faster and easier than ever.

Residents pack park district meeting to oppose Kings Point parkland alienation
It was standing room only at the Great Neck Park District Board of Commissioners’ heated meeting on Monday, Dec. 22, with residents filling the room to voice their opposition to the proposed alienation of 2.48 acres of Kings Point Park. The proposed alienation was not on the meeting’s agenda, and the board had little leverage over the matter.
Kings Court residents petition village to help with seemingly private road
Four residents living on Kings Court petitioned the Village of Kings Point Board of Trustees to improve the condition of their street at Tuesday’s meeting on Dec. 16. But the town has a problem: the street appears to be private, and therefore, is not village property and not its responsibility. “We checked the files back 80 years,” Mayor Kouros Torkan told the residents.
