What was your first job as a journalist?
First full-time news reporter job began at the Valley News of West Lebanon, N.H., after answering a classified ad.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
In journalism school we had typewriters and also some computers. The college paper used typewriters in my freshman year.
How is social media changing news?
It has transformed news into the art of finding a unique take on the news and adding value by showing why people should care.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Clark Kent; also JK Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson
What does it mean to be a journalist?
You're a searcher, analyzer and storyteller for your readers to help them navigate our complex world.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email is OK. Keep it short.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Most of them. I like a good FactSet terminal or something similar.
What's your favorite social network?
BlueSky, Patreon
Why did you become a journalist?
I always liked to read and write and check out the encyclopedia, so it was a natural fit. I also love to explore.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
We put out one issue of the Eagle Echo when I was editor, but the publication hadn't come out for a year or two before that.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Whatever story I'm working on and whatever story I've published.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Build your own online audience on social media or through Substack or Patreon and also try to build up a portfolio. Follow your dreams.
What's your favorite drink?
Coffee
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Housework, gardening, bike riding, musician stuff.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The NY Times keeps my hands pretty full, but I read stuff on Blue Sky and need to dive into my Atlantic magazine app more frequently.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
The most common misperception is that finance is boring or that it has no connection to everyday life. And people do like money.
