With the state three years into the introduction of exams aligned with higher standards, now is a good time to look back — and forward — at student progress and how higher standards are taking root in classrooms. One of the core findings in these new scores is that students in our largest cities, who need the most help, opted in to the exam.

While opponents of the Common Core standards and other special interest groups were using this year’s state English Language Arts and math tests to score political points, parents in New York’s largest urban school districts reinforced their support for those same tests. A recent analysis from our coalition, High Achievement New York, showed that 98% of students in the state’s five largest cities took these assessments.

The calls coming from the New York State Teachers Union for parents to opt their kids out of this week's state exams are nothing more than the politics of self-preservation. Their arguments are based on what is best for the union, not what is best for our children and their future. Let's speak directly about what the assessments are: They are the best way to make sure every child has basic reading and math skills.
