New Aston Martin Valen is a V12 Vanquish with added attitude
Imagine you are one of Aston Martin’s wealthiest customers, looking for a new addition to your car collection. Do you have the Vanquish, an elegant, decadent GT with a full-cream V12 up front? Or do you choose the Valhalla, a fiercely focused supercar with a mid-mounted, hybrid V8? It’s a textbook example of what social media calls a (hashtag) first-world problem.

Oura Ring 5 vs Google Fitbit Air: The battle of the fitness trackers
| The Oura Ring 5 is extremely This summer has seen the release of two hotly anticipated pieces of health tech, each aimed at polar opposite ends of the market. I wore the Oura Ring 5 and Google Fitbit Air for two weeks to see how these wearables compared to my Apple Watch Series 7. This praying mantis discovered he wasn’t getting in enough steps thanks to the Oura Ring 5 The Oura Ring 5 is probably the most beautiful wearable I’ve ever seen.

Under the Shadow at Almeida: Psychological horror set against Tehran's 1988 bombing
Under the Shadow | Alneida Theatre | ★★★★☆ This has been quite a year for horror theatre. In January we saw the UK debut of the Paranormal Activity stage show , dragging the voyeuristic, found-footage franchise kicking and screaming into the West End. And soon after the Hampstead Theatre premiered a more fringe-y affair in the sound-booth-based A Ghost in Your Ear , using modern binaural technology to whisper its spooky story directly into your frightened little ears.
The Suffolk in Aldeburgh: A super seaside City break
7 hours ago Suffolk County Council has given the government 11 days to respond to a legal challenge to plans to shake up local authorities. The government wants to scrap Suffolk's county, district and borough councils and replace them with three unitary authorities with more powers. The county council, now led …

Revenue soars at Evolv restaurants despite hospitality crisis
Steve Dinneen It is understood the company will report a modest loss for the year owing to the cost of a major restructuring since its acquisition by Calveton and Breal Capital in 2024 for a reported £60m. The company says revenue growth has continued into 2026, with sales up by more than half at both Liverpool Street Chop House and Sartoria Liverpool Street.

Hands off our spuds: How Americans 'discovered' jacket potatoes
The New York Times has found about the jacket potato, a British staple the world isn't ready for, says Steve Dinneen Sometimes in this tightly interconnected world of ours, it takes a New York Times headline to remind us that stark cultural differences still exist. “The British Have Finally Learned to Love Peanut Butter”, the paper of record declared in 2024, writing that “the land of Marmite and jam is finally embracing America's favorite [sic] spread”.

American Psycho musical at the Almeida review: Bloody brilliant
A lot has happened over the years Rupert Goold has been artistic director of the Almeida. In 2013 he opened his tenure at the Islington theatre with this wickedly amoral musical: six British Prime Ministers and one pandemic later, he completes the oroborus with the same riotous show. Back then I gave American Psycho five stars and absence has not dulled its nihilistic appeal – few nights at the theatre are this outrageously fun .
What is mushroomcore and why is it taking over the high street?
| After counting five different items in a Brighton homeware shop emblazoned with mushrooms, the case was clear: the humble fungus has risen from the mascot of underground hippy culture to a grandma-friendly motif, hewn into everything from tea towels to tiles. It’s not just cutesy seaside emporiums: “Mushroomcore” is a sartorial expression. Bella Hadid, Fiorucci and Hollister all tout funghi in their collections.
The ugly shoe that defined 2025: The New Balance snoafer
What does it say about society today that the shoe that most succinctly and perfectly typifies it also happens to be its ugliest? I am talking, of course, about the New Balance snoafer. Officially called the 1906L, it boasts the silhouette of a penny loafer and the comfort of a sneaker, though it doesn’t fully belong to either camp. First debuting at Junya Watanabe’s Paris Fashion Week show in 2024, the snoafer quickly caught everyone’s attention.
Christmas adverts in 2025 review, from John Lewis to AI Coca-Cola
As the embers of bonfire night slowly cool in the rain, our minds are turned to Christmas in its full commercial glory. It’s funny how at this time of year people start to look at ads – the same people that have been actively avoiding them all year! Christmas adverts have become a necessary backdrop to the festive season. And this year it matters more than ever.

Richard Caring hits suppliers with 'discount' amid sale talks
The Richard Caring restaurant empire, which includes the Ivy Collection and Caprice Holdings, has demanded its suppliers take a 2.5 per cent “discount”, blaming “increased tax burden and cost of employment, cost of indirect products [and] services and also direct cost of food and beverage.” In a letter dated 3 June, signed by Richard Caring’s head of indirect and beverage procurement Jeremy Evans, the company said: “Our businesses work hard to mitigate cost wherever possible in order to...

The Stimming Pool shines a light on the reality of autism
Monday 07 April 2025 2:59 pm The Stimming Pool shines a light on the reality of autism Historically, Hollywood’s portrayal of Autism has done more harm than good. Until recent years, the idea many had of neurodivergent people would come from movies such as Rain Man and The Accountant, neither of which have been heralded for their accuracy. The Stimming Pool is an experimental mix of documentary and fiction that attempts to redress the balance.

Burns Night in London: 13 places to enjoy the perfect Burns supper
The most Scottish night of the year is almost upon us. It may be 227 years since the death of the great bard Robert Burns but celebrations of his life and works have gone from strength to strength, with restaurants across London and beyond hosting Burns Supper evenings complete with whisky pairings. If you fancy ending Dry January with a big old dram of Scotland’s finest, presented while a man in a kilt plays a mangled tune on the bagpipes, then we have you well and truly covered.
Sly Stallone gets the gang back together again, again, again
In 2010, two years before Marvel made the crossover movie mainstream, Sylvester Stallone started up his own shared universe. The Expendables gave nostalgic action fans the chance to see Sly share the screen with former rivals including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis, even passing the mantle on to whippersnapper Jason Statham. It was a huge hit, spawning two bloated sequels featuring anyone who was over fifty and fancied a payday.
How two restaurants changed the City
A quarter of a century ago, the City was a very different place. Back then men in suits – and they were still mostly men – would commute in early, spend a few hours at their desk before taking a long, usually boozy lunch. After work, they would either decant to the West End or simply go home. A handful of pubs in the Square Mile would stay open until 8pm but there was nowhere to speak of that served dinner.
Brilliant Korean drama Past Lives is an early Oscar nod
Playwright and TV writer Celine Song makes her directorial debut with Past Lives, a film that made a big splash at the Berlin Film Festival, and now comes to cinemas with a huge amount of buzz. It follows two childhood friends, Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), who seem destined to be together as twelve-year-olds in South Korea, but become separated when Nora’s family moves to Toronto.
Tudor launches new versions of its ‘FXD’ Pelagos diving watch
Setting sail with the elite Alinghi Red Bull Racing, Tudor has launched two new versions of its ‘FXD’ Pelagos diving watch. There is now a ‘time-only’ and a stopwatch-fitted ‘chronograph’ (pictured right), each inspired by regatta racing. Expect to see the Chrono model on wrists at the America’s Cup, whose 37th edition is off the coast of Barcelona next summer. With cases made from carbon composite, titanium, and stainless steel, they are designed to withstand the harsh conditions on deck.
Why are all the action heroes so old?
Liam Neeson disarming two cops, cuffing them together and knocking them unconscious in Taken 3; Denzel Washington smashing a mobster over the head with a teapot in The Equalizer 2; Tom Cruise jumping off a cliff on a motorbike in MI7. What do these men all have in common, apart from being the kind of people whose pint you wouldn’t want to spill? They were all in their 60s when these scenes were filmed.
Can Denzel Washington continue to defy expectations?
Barbie’s success is perhaps a herald of change in Hollywood after years of superhero dominance. However, one thing we can rely on is that audiences will always turn up to watch an older actor beat up some bad guys. Denzel Washington’s The Equalize is the 80s remake that became an unlikely franchise, cashing in on the same audiences that made Taken a cultural touchpoint. The two-time Oscar winner returns for a third film as former marine and DIA officer Robert McCall.
How does it compare to other celebrity mugshots?
Donald Trump is nothing if not an innovator in the field of politics, this week adding “first ever mugshot of a former US president” to his list of dubious accolades. Clearly knowing the shot would be broadcast around the world, Trump has struck a fairly typical pose, glowering into the camera, right eyebrow slightly cocked, aiming for an expression of defiance and faint bemusement at the whole process.
How to sell a house in today’s tricky market
Everybody knows that painting your front door can help to sell a house – but what other hacks can you take advantage of? Just like painting the door, adding a few attractive planters and pots instantly makes the entrance a feature and hints at a home that is looked after and makes a buyer want to discover what’s inside. On any residential street you will find the exterior paintwork will weather over time, so try to keep the outside of your home in a state of good repair.
Top restaurants opening in London in 2023 and beyond
London may be in that strange, midsummer quiet period but the restaurant industry is already gearing up for the autumn rush, with some of the most exciting launches since the pre-Covid times lined up over the coming months. Whether it’s the iconic The Wolseley opening its second venue on King William Street in the City, or Jamie Oliver making a dramatic return to the London food scene, there are lots of reasons for foodies to be excited right now.
Barbie smashes into Spotify top ten soundtracks of all time
We all know the Barbie movie has been breaking box office records – but now it’s also breaking music records too. The Margot Robbie movie has now broken into the top 10 most streamed soundtracks on Spotify, despite only having been releaswed months ago. It enters a list of classic soundtracks including Hamilton, Pulp Fiction and The Lion King. There are also some more unexpected inclusions, including Forest Gump coming in at number one with more than 6 billion streams.
A fresh take on horror-comedy
There are almost as many films that make fun of the conventions of horror as there are traditional horror films. It was fresh and smart 25 years ago when Scream became a cultural phenomena, but now anyone making the same statement has to dig a bit deeper. Tim Story, the director of Barbershop and Fantastic Four, has found an interesting perspective in The Blackening. A group of friends get together for a reunion at a cabin in the woods on the weekend of Juneteenth.
