Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I wrote for a small site called MoviePilot that was growing into the games area. I discussed why it matters that games be seen as art.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I have only used one once a long time ago, but never in a serious manner.

How is social media changing news?

It is making people only think about the headline and not what the article consists of, changing minds in sometimes overly negative ways.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Does Stephen Colbert count since he is an actor? If not, Peter Parker.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To educate people on events that are important to their interests while maintaining a sense of integrity.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

None really come to mind at the moment.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I prefer emails. That is the best form of communication with me aside from Discord and Slack.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Acer Nitro 5 laptop, Microsoft Word, Asus secondary monitor, Logitech Lightspeed mouse, and a big mug of coffee.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter. It is equally a cesspool of uneducated opinions as well as a magnificent place to catch up on modern events.

Who do you wish followed you?

Matt Mercer, the guy is amazing. Anyone in the space from Kahlief Adams to Adam Sessler.

Why did you become a journalist?

I like to educate folks and write about video games. Gaming is growing in so many ways and I want to be there to help teach others about it.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

We didn't have one from what I recall.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I wrote a piece on Dungeons and Dragons and Covid where I talked about how people are managing their sanity and maintaining play sessions.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't be afraid. Everyone who is writing and editing are people just like you and I. Your first draft is never perfect.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime. I look at my phone pretty often due to social media and Kickstarter email conditioning.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

No one ever sent me a pitch before.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I never received pitches before. I also don't like to talk negatively about what people put out. I'd rather fine-tune and assist in improving

What's your favorite drink?

Besides coffee, water. I drink a ton of it.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Taking care of my daughter or playing video games.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Polygon, Kotaku, IGN, Business Insider

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That I am bias to one platform over another, when that is not the case in the least. That I am also too specific with my words.
