Legislation enacted in 2021 extends broker information reporting rules to cryptocurrency exchanges, custodians, or platforms (e.g., Coinbase, Gemini, or Binance), and to digital assets such as cryptocurrency (e.g., Bitcoin, Ether, or Dogecoin). Therefore, starting in 2023 brokers must report transactions to both the IRS and the investor on a 1099-B (or possibly a future 1099 form that is in development – i.e. 1099-DA).
