What silly fads have you enjoyed and/or participated in?
I commented to a friend the other day that I don’t understand the appeal of Labubus (these goofy-looking dolls that are currently popular with adults). I was similarly baffled about the Stanley cup craze. But it occurs to me that grumbling about and judging fads that aren’t my jam is too easy and, really, just unnecessary. I’d rather talk about the fads you DID enjoy. Did you collect something that was “in” at the time?
Is your bed made?
Right this minute, is your bed made? Is it normally made? Do you make it or does someone else?
A genie gives you one wish, but you have to make it for someone else
Wow! You just found a genie lamp. Cool! You rub it and the genie pops out and tells you the deal: He’s a pretty straightforward genie. No evil genie shenanigans on his part, but he’s also not going to allow any shenanigans on your part. That is, he’s not going to grant you world peace by killing off all the humans or anything like that, but any “I wish for infinite wishes” kind of cheat-the-genie tomfoolery won’t fly. There is a catch, though.
Do you do stuff in the bath?
3 I don’t have a bathtub that fits me, but when I was in college and living in a tiny campus apartment all I had was a bath – no shower. I would usually scroll my phone for a few minutes when I first dipped in and was soaking up the warmth, but then soon got to the scrubbing and cleaning part. The bath water cooled too quickly to really enjoy a good soak. When I lived in a house with an outdoor hot tub, that was a different story.
Best one first or save the best for last?
October 15, 2024, 1:21am 1 You get a variety pack of popsicles and there’s one flavor that’s your definite favorite. You get served a dish with side dishes and there’s one part of if you just absolutely love. Whatever it may be- we’ve all been in situations where we have to decide when to go for the best one or the best part Do you start with your favorite right out of the gate? Save the best for last? Try to spread it out? Stick it somewhere in the middle?
Dorothy's Home for Decrepit Dogs has Just Gotten Crustier (this was not part of the plan)
Since my elderly dog died in December, I’ve taken a series of foster dogs and cats. I wasn’t ready to commit to another “keeper” and wasn’t sure I would ever want one again. My last fosters went home on Tuesday and, as usual, I was going to take a break before taking another. And I was quite solidly looking to foster just one large female dog. Nothing little. No pairs. No puppies. A nice middle-aged lab mix or something. But… day before yesterday, someone called the shelter.
Singers that make you reach for the dial
February 12, 2024, 4:46pm 1 Whilst overall having a huge sweatspot for “OKish” voices (80% of which I neither greatly like or dislike), there are one or 2 that really yank my chain: the 12 year old kid singing for Rush Michael McDonald (competent singer, just cant stand him) the guy from The Smiths those make me reach for the dial/next button in a heartbeat. . what are your problem-childs?
Iconic self-identifications
February 12, 2024, 1:06am 1 You know what I’m talking about. Those moments in movies, TV shows or books where a character identifies his or herself so distinctively and iconically that it becomes a meme or gets YouTubed, etc. A couple of examples would be “I AM SPARTACUS” or “I’m Batman”. Knock yourselves out and if you want to add a clip, go ahead. One at a time, though. I just used two for purposes of illustration.
Breakfast in bed
1 “Breakfast in bed” is one of those things that people do on TV or talk about doing as a luxury/a bit of spoiling. A great start for a Mother’s Day celebration or the beginning of a perfect vacation day or something. I’ve never had it, but it seems like it might be a little awkward and messy (especially if you involve condiments).
No More Lifers: A Happy Shelter Story (and not-so-stealth brag)
As you may know, I work for a no-kill animal shelter. When I started (10 years ago!) as a caretaker in the adult cat area, it was the absolute norm for cats to be in the shelter for years, if not their whole lives. The longest resident at the time was 15 and had been in the shelter since she was about 9 months old. And she was nowhere near alone. When I started, my co-worker introduced me to all the cats and told me why each one was unadoptable or why nobody would ever want them.
Not finishing a book
What’s your personal style/philosophy? How often do you decide not to finish a book? Do you finish any book you start, no matter how little you’re enjoying it? Or, if you get a little way in and it’s not grabbing you, do you have no problem putting it down? Do you have books that you keep trying and re-visiting? Are there specific things that turn you off enough to want to abandon your book or are clear indicators from the beginning that you’re not likely to enjoy it? Does it matter what kind of book?
Recommend a crime-of-the-week type show
Here’s what I’m looking for: Something kind of along the lines of Monk, Bones, CSI, Sherlock, the various Law & Orders, etc. where there’s a different crime each episode. Or even like the first few series of Shetland, where each crime takes a few episodes to solve. Ideally, something kinda-sorta current. Like, last ten years or so? If it was on in 2007 in the US, assume I already know about it.
