The Abortion Pill Story The Medical Establishment Doesn’t Want To Tell
This article is part of Upstream, The Daily Wire’s new home for culture and lifestyle. Real human insight and human stories — from our featured writers to you. *** Four years after the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision seemingly opened the door to saving more lives, abortions are sadly increasing and countless women across America are suffering because of the growth of dangerous mail-order abortion.
SUSAN BANE: Pregnancy Centers A Place For Trusted Care Original
Imagine fighting a case all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States—only to admit during oral arguments that the entire premise was based on a lie. This embarrassing scenario became a reality for New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin this month, in his case, First Choice Women’s Resource Centers Inc. v. Platkin.
Ringing the bell: A breast cancer testimony
I rang the bell, with the help of my son, Max, at Wilson Radiation Oncology just a little over a month ago, participating in a ritual that signified the completion of 20 radiation treatments for cancer. I was diagnosed with breast cancer on April 28. I was in an Uber in front of our nation’s Capitol Building. I was about to begin a meeting in which I would be advocating for laws and policies that protect the lives of my patients when the call came.
3 years after Dobbs, Wilson is answering the call
She needed a home after her family wouldn’t let her stay — a Wilson family provided that. She needed emergency surgery for an ectopic pregnancy — Wilson OB/Gyn provided that. He needed to know being an engaged father mattered — Wilson’s Embrace Grace Men Program provided that. She needed transportation for her young family — Wilson County Transportation and the city of Wilson’s Ride on-demand transit service provided that.
The future of women's health care: Trusting pregnancy centers to meet women's needs
"I came to Choices Women's Center because I was building my exit plan." Those were my patient's words, and that exit plan included leaving her marriage and possibly ending the life of her child. As she said, "I was 100% considering aborting my baby." Pregnancy centers are essential in the landscape of women's health care, providing access to compassionate, high-quality, life-affirming care for women just like this patient.

Making Sense of America’s Maternal Mortality Crisis
ProPublica has recently gained significant media attention by revealing tragic instances of maternal deaths in a post-Dobbs landscape. Readers may be familiar with the cases of Amber Thurman, a Georgia woman who died after doctors inexplicably delayed miscarriage treatment, and Candi Miller, another Georgia woman who died from infection after using the abortion pill and was found to have traces of opioids in her system.
Grateful for local and statewide partnerships
“Teenage girls, much too young, unprepared for what’s to come.” “Not a ring on her hand, all her dreams and all her plans, a baby changes everything.” These lyrics from American country singer Faith Hill’s song, “A Baby Changes Everything,” share the story of Mary’s experience when faced with the unplanned pregnancy of Jesus. An unplanned pregnancy is one of […]
Women need medical care, not misinformation
On Sept. 17, ProPublica released an article titled “Abortion Bans Have Delayed Emergency Medical Care. In Georgia, Experts say this Mother’s Death Was Preventable.” The author blames Georgia’s pro-life law and pro-life laws across the nation for the death of Amber Thurman — a 28-year-old mom who took legal abortion drugs and died in 2022. We do not have Amber’s […]
Medical Failures and Political Fearmongering, Not Pro-Life Policies, Caused Georgia Maternal Deaths
COMMENTARY: Politically charged reporting that followed in the wake of these tragic events failed to examine the true reasons these women didn’t receive proper medical care. A pro-abortion rights activist holds a box of mifepristone during a rally in front of the US Supreme Court on March 26, 2024, in Washington, DC.
Medical Failures and Political Fearmongering, Not Pro-Life Policies, Caused Georgia Maternal Deaths
COMMENTARY: Politically charged reporting that followed in the wake of these tragic events failed to examine the true reasons these women didn’t receive proper medical care. , September 23, 2024 – National Catholic Register The loss of Georgia mothers Amber Thurman and Candi Miller are a tragic example of the very real dangers of chemical abortion and a shameful manipulation of the facts to undermine pro-life laws.
Fighting the Good Fight Requires Teamwork - and Hope
COMMENTARY: We may feel like the underdogs, but this is the time to out-play those that treat life like a game. The Littlest General: Newspaper clipping of Dr. Susan Bane at her high school basketball game . (photo: Courtesy photo / Dr. Susan Bane) Commentaries September 12, 2024 Many days, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by pro-abortion attacks on common sense protections for babies and moms.
In unplanned pregnancies, dads’ input matters
I recently had the privilege to attend a Senate hearing on abortion in Washington. The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pension is chaired by Sen. Bernie Sanders, and he began the hearing by immediately handing the gavel to Sen. Patty Murray, a woman, stating that “it is appropriate for a woman to chair this important hearing.” I was deeply saddened.
Supportive dads can help moms choose life
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently made waves when he said during a fundraising call that men are “more free” in a society that fights for access to abortion. His remarks sadly reflect a stereotype that I see play out each day as an obstetrician/gynecologist caring for women with unplanned pregnancies.
Foundation YMCA a microcosm of society’s best
I love the Foundation YMCA of Wilson! I drive downtown multiple times a week to exercise, typically working out on the cardio equipment, lifting weights, swimming laps or taking a yoga class. I am there for my personal health, but I find myself, both as a doctor and Ph.D trained in exercise science, observing those around me at the gym. […]
The choice to reverse medication abortions
One of the greatest accomplishments in Wilson County in recent years has been the work done to prevent and treat opioid overdoses. The Wilson County Opioid Multidisciplinary Team reported in 2021 that naloxone, also known as Narcan, saved the lives of 89 individuals in Wilson County and 4,154 in North Carolina. Narcan is a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid […]
Scare tactics mislead public on abortion
There is not a single state or federal law in America that prevents a qualified health care professional from providing lifesaving care for pregnant women and girls who experience a miscarriage, ectopic (tubal) pregnancy or any other life-threatening medical emergency. This was true before the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision in 2022 that overturned Roe v. Wade and has remained true […]
Case centers on abortion pill safety, not access
“I bled so much I couldn’t get off the floor. I was cold and shaking.” “I was home on a break from college, upstairs in my bedroom, alone and scared, bleeding so hard with no one to help me.” “I had questions, but there were so many of us in the room. I signed off on papers, but no one […]
SOTU Guest Is A Reminder That Imperfect Babies Deserve Life
Tonight Americans will watch as President Biden recognizes Texas woman Kate Cox at his 2024 State of the Union Address. Cox became a “victim” according to the pro-abortion left last December when the Texas Supreme Court ruled she could not abort her unborn baby diagnosed with Trisomy 18, a condition associated with severe developmental delays. Her lawyers said she ultimately obtained an abortion out of state.
Keep sports safe, fair for female athletes
Sport has been central to my identity for as long as I can remember. I recall endless hours of shooting hoops in the driveway and playing catch in the backyard with my dad. I loved to swim, ride my bike and play hide and seek, tag and kickball. I did not like my ballet classes — probably because I wasn’t […]

Thank you to all of Wilson’s ‘Dr. Jeffersons’
I was in the Dollar General recently and came across a coloring book honoring Black History Month titled “Brilliantly Black: Coloring Black Historical Icons.” Black men and women who have made contributions to areas such as education, medicine, astronomy, civil rights, journalism, politics and ministry were highlighted in this coloring book. There were people we are familiar with, including Vice […]
Pregnancy centers empower women with information
I was in absolute awe Jan. 19 as I stood on stage with several other leaders in the pro-life movement at the National March for Life in Washington, D.C. Standing in front of me, in the midst of a snowy and bitterly cold winter wonderland, were thousands of nonviolent warriors of all ages, colors of skin, spiritual beliefs and nationalities […]
As an OGBYN I Can Confirm Pregnant Women Need Help and Support, Not Abortion
Today, tens of thousands of people are descending upon our nation’s capital to participate in the 51st annual March for Life, showcasing this year’s theme: “with every woman, for every child.” The march’s yearly turnout is a testimony to the heart of the pro-life movement and a reminder that expecting mothers have a wide range of resources, comfort, and support at their disposal.
Keep contributing and keep healing
I love to write locally. The heart of our community is its people, and The Wilson Times is a place that shares both the opportunities and challenges faced by people in our community. As stated in an Oct. 2 editorial, “A city without a newspaper is a city without a soul.” Newspapers play a vital role in American democracy by […]
What happened in Ohio? Ads distort truth on abortion
Exit polls in Ohio clearly showed that most voters oppose unlimited abortion on demand, yet this is what 57% of the citizens voted for with the passing of Issue 1. This outcome is consistent with ballot initiatives that have successfully passed in other states since the reversal of Roe v. Wade and will be part of upcoming elections across the […]
Let’s make Wilson a place that values unborn life
His actions speak louder than words. Joseph doesn’t have a single line in the Bible, yet he is there, loving Mary unconditionally, caring for her with great compassion and accompanying her on a journey he knows he must take, even though he is unsure where it may lead. Joseph is an unsung hero, as are so many of the men we see walking into Choices Women’s Center. They are equally scared about what the next step in their lives will look like.
OBGYN Confirms Women Don't Need Abortions: Mother and Unborn Baby are Both Patients
Exit polls in Ohio clearly showed that most voters oppose unlimited abortion on demand, yet that’s what 57% of the Ohioans voted for with the passage of Issue 1 on Nov. 7. Ohio Physicians for Reproductive Rights and its allies persuaded a lot of people who believe in limits on induced abortion to vote in favor of abortions of preborn children who could survive outside the womb using a barbaric dilation-and-evacuation procedure, in which babies are dismembered.
On Ohio's Issue 1, OB-GYN Debunks Deceptive Abortion Narrative

Ohio Physicians for Reproductive Rights and their allies persuaded a lot of people who believe in limits on induced abortion to vote in favor of abortions of preborn children who could survive outside the womb using a barbaric dilation-and-evacuation procedure, in which babies are dismembered.
Budget, court challenge affect pregnancy care law
In June, the North Carolina legislature passed Senate Bill 20, the Care for Women, Children and Families Act, which provides tangible assistance to address barriers and gives women support when they experience an unexpected pregnancy. Two major updates regarding this bill have occurred, including the new state budget and a recent legal decision related to two aspects of the law.
Replacing ‘my body, my choice’ with ‘my baby, my chance’
“I came to Choices Women’s Center (Choices) because I was building my exit plan.” Those were the words of one of our patients — I will call her Jessica — whose exit plan included leaving her marriage and possibly ending the life of her third child. “I was 100% considering aborting my baby,” she shared.
Abortion rate dwarfs US gun deaths
In my last column, I wrote about the recent North Carolina legislation known as Senate Bill 20: The Women, Children and Families Act. This bill regulates induced abortion in our state, reducing the gestational age at which an induced abortion can occur from 20 weeks to 12 weeks gestation, with exceptions including rape, incest, life-limiting fetal conditions and medical emergencies in the mother.
On abortion, separate fact from fiction
By Corey Friedman | on May 17, 2023 By Susan Bane I am a doctor, not a politician. Tuesday was a first for me. I listened to debates in the North Carolina Senate and House and watched legislators cast votes on a bill on which I had been able to share my voice, both as a citizen of North Carolina and as a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist.
‘First, do no harm’ unites health care practitioners
“Watchful waiting” is one of the treatment options for helping children and adolescents suffering from gender identify issues.
‘First, do no harm:’ Gender dysphoria and watchful waiting
Picture this: A patient has a ruptured appendix, and his surgeon says an emergency appendectomy is needed. Another patient has cancer and chemotherapy is recommended by her doctor. A third patient has diabetes, and her doctor wants to prescribe insulin.
Women Deserve To Be Empowered By Doctors, Not Rushed To Medical Abortion Without Them
Expecting mothers deserve attentive medical care just like all other patients.
Women Should Be Empowered By Doctors, Not Rushed To Abortion Without Them
Picture this: A woman has an episode of chest pain. Another has numbness in her right arm and leg. A third woman finds a lump in her breast. And another has an unexpected positive pregnancy test. Each of these women likely has questions: Am I having a heart attack? Am I having a stroke? Do I have breast cancer? Should I deliver my baby or have an abortion? Each of these women deserves to be empowered with information.
Gender-affirming care
By Corey Friedman | on March 15, 2023 By Susan Bane I was recently described as “bold” when a colleague was asked to pick one adjective that represented my leadership style. I immediately had flashbacks to my childhood when I would talk back to my mom and she would say, “Susan Marie Maxwell — do not be bold!” I didn’t expect the word “bold” from my colleague because I am a self-proclaimed peacemaker and bridge-builder. However, I now realize I can be both at the same time.
Gender dysphoria in children
I was in seventh grade and in the girls’ bathroom. I was wearing jeans and a flannel shirt, had yet to really need my first bra and had very short hair. I will never forget a lady walking in and asking me to leave, telling me this was the boys’ bathroom. I looked back at her with my eyes welling up and said, “I am a girl!” I went home that night and told my mom I was growing my hair long and piercing my ears.
Breaking down the gender dysphoria diagnosis
Diabetes can be diagnosed by a blood test. Breast cancer can be diagnosed with a biopsy. A broken bone can be diagnosed with an X-ray. There is no blood test, biopsy or X-ray that can diagnose mental health disorders. Mental health disorders are diagnosed using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, commonly known as the DSM. According to the American Psychological Association, the first edition of this text was published in 1952. It was 32 pages and included 106 diagnoses.
Why I march in post-Roe America
Donald Trump pulls absolutely insane move at golf tournament Former president Donald Trump claimed victory in the seniors’ golf championship at his property in West Palm Beach, Florida, over the weekend. “A great honor,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday. “Competed against many fine golfers, and was hitting the ball long and straight. Why I march in post-Roe America
By Corey Friedman | on January 26, 2023 By Susan Bane I believe in the Hippocratic Oath I took more than 25 years ago — the direct and intentional killing of a human being is wrong, whether pre-born or born. On Friday, Jan. 20, I marched in the 50th March for Life in Washington, D.C., the first march in a post-Roe America. I was joined by thousands of people from across […]
What can we learn from Mary’s pregnant pause?
By Corey Friedman | on December 23, 2022 By Susan Bane We are in the final days of 2022. It is the season of Advent, a holy time of the year in the Christian tradition when we look to the coming of the Lord — to the manger — to a baby, born to save the world. Mary, Jesus’ mother, like so many today, had an unintended pregnancy. However, she was […]
No medical evidence supports abortions for mental health
It was March 2008, and I got a phone call I will never forget. My dad shared with me that he had lung cancer and “a few spots” on his brain and adrenal gland. Stage IV lung cancer — I knew my dad was going to die, I just didn’t know when. I also knew I wanted to spend as much time as possible with him as I could. I began the grieving process that day. It was May 2008. Crystal, a patient of mine, received news she would never forget.
Replace culture of death with a civilization of love
OPINION The Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization on Dec. 1. Mississippi argued the Court should reverse Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey and return the abortion issue to the states. After months of anticipation, the Supreme Court handed down the Dobbs decision on June 24. Justice Samuel Alito wrote the majority opinion, joined by Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.

I heard about the leak of Justice Alito’s majority opinion in the Supreme Court’s Dobbs case on the night of May 2. I was shocked — not so much by the opinion, but rather by the leak itself. A leak of a draft opinion of this magnitude is unprecedented.
