Canada backs United States actions in Iran
Sue Allan Prime Minister Mark Carney said Saturday that Canada supports the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, calling the country “the principal source of instability and terror throughout the Middle East” and citing its human rights record. Speaking in Mumbai, where he is leading a trade delegation, Carney urged Canadians in Iran to shelter in place.

He said Canada has consistently called on the Iranian regime to end its nuclear program — including at the G7 Summit Ottawa hosted last summer in Kananaskis, Alberta — and noted that Canada has listed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist group. “Despite numerous diplomatic efforts, Iran has neither fully dismantled its nuclear program, halted all enrichment activities, nor ended its support for regional terrorist proxy groups,” Carney said.

Carney vs. everyone
After the pomp and ceremony, he’ll preside over a tight, three-week sitting in which he’s pledged to pass a “middle class” tax cut and reduce regulations on businesses to allow for more open trade within Canada. Both measures aim to offset Donald Trump’s tariffs, as Canada and the U.S. renegotiate a new trade and security deal. Carney will have to find his feet in Canada’s House of Commons while confronting pressing challenges and undergoing a crash course in real-world politics.
No honeymoon for Mark Carney
OTTAWA — Mark Carney is getting to work. Parliament has reopened in Ottawa after a nearly six-month hiatus. And the former central banker, who campaigned as a political outside and seasoned crisis manager, is up against a steep learning curve. Canada’s new prime minister will outline his priorities on Tuesday in a speech he’s recruited King Charles III to deliver.
