What was your first job as a journalist?
Writing obituaries for the Chattanooga News-Free Press in Tennessee.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes.
How is social media changing news?
It's disseminating info nonstop, to positive & negative effect. It's also sometimes making news when posts prompt action.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Brenda Starr, and the characters in Evelyn Waugh's Scoop.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means carrying tremendous responsibility, and holding the public trust.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
Hmmm... not sure.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Via email.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Notepad and fine-point black ink pen; MacBook Pro.
What's your favorite social network?

Anyone who is interested in international security.
Why did you become a journalist?
I love history, and I wanted to write history as it unfolds.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Yes. I wrote editorials.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
There are too many to single out one story.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Do your homework. Research the issues, and know your sources; and remember always to look for truth.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Any time. It may sit in my inbox for a while, but I will see it when I finish whatever project I'm on when it comes in.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
One that keeps resurfacing: "My life story will be a bestselling book. I want you to write it, and we will split the proceeds 50-50."
What's your favorite drink?
Harmless Harvest pink coconut water.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
At the gym, or walking on the beach or through the woods.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I love scouring the foreign press overall.

I'm not sure what the misperceptions are.
