Naloxone can save lives
I hope that many of you will be familiar with the work the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) does to investigate your complaints. You might not know that the PPO is also responsible for investigating deaths in prison. In September 2021, we began a 12-month pilot to investigate the deaths of people who had recently been released.
What is independence?
If you’ve read our previous articles in Inside Time, seen our complaints posters and leaflets around the prison, or heard our adverts on Prison Radio, you’ll know that we take great care to explain that the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) is independent of the Prison Service and those who work for it. In this article, I want to explain why our independence is so important to us – and what impact it has for you if you make a complaint to the PPO.

Q: I seek your advice about dark circles around my eyes which I’ve had now for about 10 years. I am 50 years old and in good health, and whilst I’ve tried to change my diet, sleeping patterns and even a cold compress it simply has not worked. I would really value your advice. A: Thank you for asking this question! Dark circles around eyes are common in men and women and not usually a sign of a medical problem.

Q I have seen the prison doctor and have been given various creams, I have also been to the hospital as it has not improved, and they gave me more cream and said they will take a biopsy. I now have Ringworm from head to toe and it’s driving me mad and I am in a lot of pain. Could you please help me and tell me what I can do to get of this Ringworm? A Ringworm is badly named as it is caused by a tiny fungus, but it does typically spread outwards in a circular pattern.
Garry’s story: studying for a degree in prison
I knew I had a big sentence and I knew that in that time you could probably do a degree. I thought, ‘I’m going to be sat in here for six years, so I just can’t sit here doing nothing.’ And I knew I had to come away from my past because the next time I’d probably be doing 20, 30 years because it’s my third time. I didn’t have any previous qualifications. I had an O Level Art back in the ‘80s which I think they threw away. So what am I going to do? What’s my trade? Haven’t got any.
