Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Working as a lowly paid reporter for an agency called Press Gang News. 12 hour days and some horrible phone calls.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes! I learnt to type on one #old

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Hapless William Boot and Frayn's John Dyson

What's your favorite social network?

Most useful is Twitter, but I'd hesitate to call it a 'favourite'.

Why did you become a journalist?

I've always loved writing from a young age and then seeing Kate Adie reporting from Tiananmen Square in 1989.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Not my high school paper but my university one - I was arts editor at Leicester University's The Ripple

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I really enjoyed working on a recent article for Euronews on whether sustainability was a gender issue. Threw up some interesting ideas.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't work for free and become an expert in a field.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Late morning.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Guardian, LRB

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That our work is all about scoops.
