Looking to the Future
By Sven Leyffer One of the most rewarding and enjoyable aspects of being SIAM President is the numerous opportunities to meet and interact with students — our future SIAM leaders, as I like to call them. Argonne National Laboratory recently hosted the “Chicagoland” SIAM student chapters, which include the Illinois Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, and the University of Illinois Chicago.

President’s Column: Musings on SIAM and CSE23
By Sven Leyffer I am writing this article—hopefully the first of many during my two-year tenure as SIAM President—while flying home from the 2023 SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE23), together with a few dozen bleary-eyed CSE23 attendees (enough for two minisymposia and a small poster session).
Addressing Climate Change, Boosting Environmental Resilience, and Advancing Clean Energy
By Alejandro Aceves, Hans Kaper, and Sven Leyffer How can applied mathematics and computational science boost environmental resilience, drive clean energy innovation, and advance society’s understanding of climate change and its impact on humans? These questions were at the heart of a series of meetings of the SIAM Climate Task Force, which was established by SIAM's Committee on Science Policy (CSP).
ICIAM 2019 Panel Explores Academic and Industrial Careers in Mathematical Sciences
By Sven Leyffer, Volker Mehrmann, Jill Pipher, Ami E. Radunskaya, Wil Schilders, and Carlos Vázquez The 9th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM 2019) in Valencia, Spain, featured a special panel on mathematical science careers in academia and industry. Panelists Sven Leyffer (Argonne National Laboratory), Volker Mehrmann (European Mathematical Society (EMS) and Technische Universität Berlin), Jill Pipher (American Mathematical Society and Brown University), Ami E.
Writing for Success: Applying for Funding
By Sven Leyffer The following are some personal observations on how to write successful proposals. These thoughts are the fruit of half a career’s worth of (mostly unsuccessful!) proposals, observations from funding agency panels, and, most important, lessons learned from the panelists at SIAM’s professional development evening at the 2014 annual meeting in Chicago.
Improving Earth System Predictability with Artificial Intelligence
By Sven Leyffer and Salil Mahajan The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently organized a series of workshops to identify challenges and research opportunities for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) within Earth system models (ESMs).
Reflecting on and Reinventing SIAM Conferences
Since more of the world has emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic, we felt that now is a good time to reflect on the past three years of conferences, share our experiences, and outline SIAM’s developing plans for 2024 and beyond. The stress, heartache, and overall impact of the pandemic cannot be overstated, even as memories of school and workplace shutdowns, stay-at-home ordinances, and supply chain breakdowns begin to fade.
