NFL 2026-2027: Week 5
In Week 4, the surprising Browns edged the Steelers on Thursday, and the Colts spanked Washington in London. The Pats handed the Bills their first loss in their new stadium, and the Rams beat the Eagles in Philly. Browns, Bears, Jags, Giants, and Ravens are all 3-1, while the Fins, Bucs, Titans, and Texans remain winless.
Harvey Weinstein has been taken to the hospital
July 1, 2026, 3:49pm 1 Heart failure, they say, connected with pneumonia. I suppose I should hope he pulls through. Metro – 1 Jul 26 Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was taken to hospital this week after experiencing acute heart failure in prison.
James Van Der Beek RIP
February 11, 2026, 8:22pm 1 NBC News – 11 Feb 26 The actor was diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer in November 2024.
Bud Cort RIP
February 11, 2026, 8:17pm 1 He was probably most famous for Harold and Maude but he will always be the voice of the Computer in Electric Dreams to me.
Lord of the Flies on BBC
January 29, 2026, 11:49pm 1 Four one-hour episodes drop on iPlayer on Sunday, February 8th. Then they show them on the regular channels over the weeks to follow. Presumed BBC link all can read with trailer It looks pretty close to the book: Wartime evacuation of a rich British boys’ school. Some of the background characters may be Indian or Asian, yet I find it plausible whether or not Golding made mention. Ralph, Piggy, and Jack are white kids.
The Pitt, season 2 (TV show, open spoilers)
January 11, 2026, 5:22pm 1 S2 I had been late to watching S1 so am starting S2 with only 2 weeks break. Literally just started streaming the first new ep, so it can’t count as a spoiler, and I’m taken out of it and had to stop just to post! Unless it becomes a plot point … ED docs see enough motorcycle head injuries that they nearly to a one always wear their helmets. The ED docs I know generally refer to those riding without helmets as “organ donors”.

Original KISS lead guitarist is on life support after suffering a brain bleed after a fall in his studio a couple of weeks ago. We’re told he’s been on a ventilator for some time, and hasn’t gotten better – so, his family is considering turning off support … perhaps as soon as Thursday evening.
RIP Malcolm-Jamal Warner (July 21, 2025)
July 21, 2025, 5:58pm 1 Malcom-Jamal Warner has died in an accidental drowing: Variety – 21 Jul 25 Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who played Theodore Huxtable on 'The Cosby Show,' has died in an accidental drowning. He was 54. I’ve always liked him, and had really enjoyed him on The Resident.
Democrats Who Wouldn't Honor A 13 Year Old with Brain Cancer?
March 7, 2025, 4:01am 1 How do we feel about the Democrats who wouldn’t stand or applaud when 13 year old brain cancer survivor Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel was made an honorary Secret Service agent during Trump’s address to Congress?
Didn't see this one coming: Michelle Trachtenberg has died
Damn, way too young. Also hard to believe she was 39 already. Oof, yeah, hard to believe she was 39. The success rate for a liver transplant is generally pretty high, but not perfect. RIP. Man, that one hits hard. I always loved her on The Adventures of Pete and Pete when I was a kid. Lost her way too young.
Who is the worst player to win Super Bowl MVP?
January 13, 2025, 8:36pm 1 By this I don’t mean the worst pick, the most mediocre performance by someone they gave the award to. I mean the player who, other than that amazing Super Bowl, was the most unimpressive player over the course of his career. For your edification, a list of all Super Bowl MVPs: Pro-Football-Reference.com Check out the list of all Super Bowl Most Valuable Player winners and find out who won the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player in which year.
Flukey sports plays
October 13, 2024, 9:31pm 1 There was an extremely flukey play yesterday in the Riders-Lions game in the CFL, with one of the oddest pick-sixes you can imagine. See the embedded video in this story (link goes to a Canadian sports news page, “3 Down Nation”, covering the CFL).
Kris Kristofferson has died
September 29, 2024, 10:54pm 1 Variety – 29 Sep 24 Kris Kristofferson, a groundbreaking country music singer-songwriter and a Hollywood actor in 'A Star Is Born' and 'Blade,' has died at age 88 I don’t care what anybody says. I liked Heaven’t Gate.
What is the point of abolishing abortion?
August 30, 2024, 4:00pm 1 What is the extreme right’s reasoning behind abolishing abortion? And the subsequent stopping of contraception, and IVF (which doesn’t even fit in the same category, IMHO.) I’ve heard of the Project 2025 reasons of “having more white babies born” to counteract the fact that more brown people are coming in. But under this law or rule, brown and black people can’t have abortions either and they will keep having children.
Hillary & Kamala vs. Biden & Trump
August 27, 2024, 8:31pm 1 Now that I got you with the clickbait title: Why do you think that with female candidates we tend to use their first name more than we do with male candidates?
What's with the mathematical symbols on the Ipswich Town FC jerseys?
August 17, 2024, 3:40pm 1 Soccer Wearhouse PLEASE NOTE: IF ORDERED WITH A NAMESET AND/OR PATCH, DELIVERY CAN TAKE 2-3 WEEKS IF NOT IN STOCK. ALL CUSTOMIZED JERSEYS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR RETURNS OR EXCHANGES. This shirt represents the pride both players and supporters feel for Ipswich Town... Price: USD 100 Is their sponsor the Ministry of Maths? Also, what’s their … term of endearment?
Who should play Tim Walz on SNL?
Name your best choice. I’ve seen Steve Martin suggested. I can’t think of any myself, but I’m sure you all will have some good ideas. I think Jason Sudeikis could pull it off. I’m typically adamant that a member of the current cast should do it; but, of the current cast, only James Austin Johnson I think is truly capable, and he’s already busy playing Trump. If they have to bring in a ringer, they should get Darrell Hammond to do it. He technically still works on the show as the announcer.
Republican National Convention 7/15/24-7/18/24 Milwaukee
July 11, 2024, 10:33pm 1 I’ve been meaning to start this thread for a while now. It’s local for me and I don’t want to dump all the news about it into the Stupid Republican News thread. I’ll start things off with the first thing attendees will see when they enter: Charlie Sykes, for those that don’t know him, is (was?) a conservative radio personality. However, I assume he’s denouncing The Heritage Foundation, since he seems to be anti-Trump.
Which classic movies are begging for a sequel? Rules in OP
June 10, 2024, 1:48pm 1 Inspired by the upcoming Beetlejuice movie. Which classic movies have potential to have a successful sequel or remake made? Here are the rules. By classic, I mean movies from 1974 - 1999, an admittedly arbitrary 25 to 50 years ago. The movie can’t already have a sequel or remake. A TV series, video game, book, comic book, etc. are acceptable. Given those two restrictions, which movies do you think have potential to have a good sequel or remake made?
Angel Hernandez, Worst MLB Ump ever, retires
3 I can’t access the “greatest hits” in the second link, but man, he was terrible. Just objectively awful. A completely unpredictable strike zone and Hellen Keller’s eye. I hope he’s happy in his retirement. The rest of us sure will be.
The Deradicalization of the Palestinians
On Monday Benjamin Netanyahu wrote in the Wall Street Journal an opinion piece (paywalled) about Israel’s three prerequisites for peace, the third of which is the deradicalization of Palestinian society, saying that children are taught to “cherish life rather than death,” and drew as examples of “successful deradicalization” Germany and Japan after the Allied victory in World War II, and that both nations are great allies of the U.S. and promote peace, stability and prosperity in Europe and...
Henry Kissinger Has Died
9 Liberal CNN is praising him at the moment. A woman I worked with long ago described him as slime. I had admired some international settlement he worked out. I particularly admired his refusing to say anything when asked about a political killing, “The United States does not condone assassination as an intrnational tool.” I was not following international events closely at the time.
Nikki Haley now backed by Koch Bros. APA political organization. Impact on GOP race?
CNN analyst says this is a “big deal” that could really move the needle for Haley because of the huge amount of money that Americans for Prosperity Action has and will use to influence elections. “Millions and millions and millions of dollars in ads” for one thing. I don’t think it will be enough to get her the nomination, but I still hope against hope for that very thin chance to come through.
Tim Scott is suspending his campaign (11/12)
My first reaction was, “Which one is Tim Scott?” According to the CNN story, “‘Tim ran an optimistic, hopeful message — but that’s not where the Republican base is right now,’ a Republican official who supported Scott told CNN.” Let that be a lesson to Democrats who don’t understand why Donald Trump is still a viable candidate. Tim Scott is a black Republican. That gives him a curiosity factor and a defense for Republicans against charges the party and its voters are racist.
Baseball rules changes 2023
1 Is there a consensus on how well the new Major League Baseball rules for 2023 worked out? I don’t watch baseball enough to have an informed opinion, but I’m curious what others think. en.wikipedia.org On September 8, 2022, MLB announced a set of rules changes that will take effect in 2023. 1.A pitch clock was introduced, with these requirements: A standardized period of 30 seconds between batters within each half-inning.
Why only 217 votes needed to elect a Speaker of the House?
4 State laws vary on this, but elections always occur in year one, but as state laws rule in year two. All states, territories, and districts require special elections to fill any vacant House seats during the first session of a Congress. During the second session of a Congress, however, procedures often vary depending on the amount of time between the vacancy and the next general election.
Napoleon (Ridley Scott movie)
Neat trailer, but Ridley Scott has to be one of the best examples of a director who makes amazing movies and terrible movies with no real way to determine quality before the movie is released. Seriously, his filmography is a mix of amazing movies like Alien, Blade Runner, and The Martian and atrocious movies like…well, you can look at his filmography and pick. He actually has a ton of bad movies. I hope this one is successful.
Things I Learned Watching a Twilight Zone Marathon
If we ever receive a visitor from another planet, we’re screwed. All dolls, puppets, ventriloquist dummies, mannequins, etc. are evil. Get one of those dorky neck chains to secure your spectacles. In the early 1960s, you could apparently bring a gun on an airplane and no one noticed or seemed to care. Communities should pool their resources and build nuclear fallout shelters big enough to house all the residents (just trust me on this). Evil people are subjected to ironic punishment in the afterlife.
Sports surprise of the week: Joe Namath is still alive
FWIW, if his Wikipedia entry is accurate, Namath has actually been sober for most of the last 35 years. It indicates that he quit drinking in 1987 (as it was ruining his marriage), but then started drinking again after his divorce in 2000. After his embarrassing interview with Suzy Kolber in 2003 (during which he was, indeed, drunk), he went into a treatment program, and has apparently been sober since.
