Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first media job was with PhoneDog, a mobile technology blog. I did written and video product reviews for the blog and YouTube channel.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes! My Mom had a typewriter when I was a kid. I used it several times before we got a computer. I typed up school assignments on it!

How is social media changing news?

I don't like how easily misinformation is spread through social media. I also think news outlets go for clicks rather than truth now.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

My favorite book is The Kidnapping of Aaron Green by Terry Kay. I don't read much fiction, but that's a good start.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

We share information. I've always wanted to help people learn something new or see something they didn't get to see before.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I don't have an answer for this one. I don't know if I've ever seen a funny hashtag related to a news topic.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Through email, please. I'm usually happy to collab, just give me as many details as possible.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

WordPress, Ahrefs, Grammerly, Hemmingway Editor, Google Analytics, Search Console, and Adsense, Google Drive, iMovie, Microsoft Office.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter. It's the best way to connect and interact with an audience on a personal level.

Who do you wish followed you?

Bill Simmons, I suppose. I think we have a similar stance on the role media members play in covering sports.

Why did you become a journalist?

I love learning new things and then sharing what I learned.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I didn't work for my school paper. I spent most of my high school years learning about web design and graphic design.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I'm proud of everything I created for my channel Mixed Tape Videos. Hundreds of videos and tens of millions of views. Lots of hard work.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Keep growing, whatever it takes. When I didn't see any opportunities, I created my own, I made my own media outlet. Always be learning.

When's the best time to pitch you?

I prefer to be reached by email, so anytime works.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Honestly, haven't had a bad pitch yet. Most people are respectful of your time because they're busy too. And I like collaborating with others

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Honestly, I've never had a bad pitch. Maybe I just haven't been doing this for long enough!

What's your favorite drink?

Tall decaf latte, no foam, one raw sugar. (The "no foam" is important.)

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Either playing a video game or spending time with my husband.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I follow many NBA and digital marketing blogs. Among my favorites are The Ringer, Mavs Moneyball, GotchSEO, and numerous books.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That women don't (or can't) know as much about sports as men do. Not everyone feels this way, but it boggles my mind when I hear the notion.
