The Fabric of Convergence
Introduction In September 2025, we travelled to Kandy, Sri Lanka, along with more than 700 other activists from more than 100 countries and Indigenous Territories, to attend the 3rd Nyéléni Global Forum. ‘Nyéléni’ is the name of a woman farmer from Mali. To recognise and honour her strength, her name was given to the first Food Sovereignty Forum held in Mali in 2007, in which global food producer movements collectively articulated the six pillars of food sovereignty.
The Campaign for Peatland Justice
What are peatlands and why do they matter? Peatlands are unique ecosystems formed over thousands of years, made of layer upon layer of plant matter which is unable to fully decompose due to the large amounts of water. This makes peatlands vital stores of carbon: peatlands cover just 3% of the world’s land surface but store 30% of all terrestrial carbon. Intact peatlands remove and store carbon from the atmosphere, locking it away for millennia.
Rooting Deeper Through Agroecology
Four bicycle excursions took place on the first day of the festival. The first excursion was called ‘Biodiverse Grains in an Ancient Cultural Landscape’. This tour explored the connection between biodiversity, culture, and agriculture. At Graangeluk, Marcel van Silfhout introduced Dutch heritage grains like emmer, cultivated with native herbs on historic fields. The tour continued to Windmill de Vlijt for a guided tour and a chance to climb the windmill.
Green hydrogen, old colonialism
Europe’s quest for access to more green hydrogen regained momentum on January 21, 2025, when a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDoI) was signed in Rome by representatives from Germany, Algeria, Italy, Austria, and Tunisia. The agreement concerns the Southern Hydrogen Corridor project, a proposed pipeline network for transporting gaseous hydrogen from North Africa to Europe.

The EU’s extractive trade policies in Tunisia contribute to migration
Since the start of the year, the number of people fleeing North Africa by boat to the European Union has increased significantly. Even though some of them are people on the move from sub-Saharan Africa, using countries like Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya as transit points, many are locals who can no longer make a living in their own country. The EU has scrambled to block more people from crossing the Mediterranean by intensifying its surveillance and militarisation of its southern sea borders.

Living on the land
“Family farming is dead in Tunisia” according to Zakaria, a small farmer from Chenini, an oasis in Gabes in south-east Tunisia. This is the verdict he reached after the signing of the Comprehensive Partnership Package in June between the EU and Tunisia.
Aligning Drug Policy with Environmental Protection
Environmental standards and legal regulation The third recommendation is around how best to integrate environmental standards within models of legal regulation. Taking the example of cannabis, the environmental record in jurisdictions where cannabis has been regulated is decidedly mixed.

William Shoki This week on AIAC Talk, we speak with Leswin Laubscher and Derek Hook about the phenomenology of Franz Fanon and the ways he is understood throughout different eras of time. Ali Amouzai Sylvia Kay Hamza Hamouchene COVID-19 exposed and exacerbated inequality and insecurity in North Africa's food systems. But the roots of the current crisis can be found in the legacy of colonialism and new forms of imperialism.
A just recovery from COVID-19
Food systems are often a point of focus and expression for crises and popular resistance in North Africa. When subsidies are lifted and the prices of essential foods spike, social uprisings follow—and they are nearly always severely suppressed. Uprisings followed the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) interventions after the debt crisis in the 1970s and 1980s.
Towards a Just Recovery from the Covid-19 Crisis
The urgent struggle for food sovereignty in North Africa 22 September 2021 Report This report examines the intersections between Covid-19 and food systems across the North African region. It looks at how the dominant ‘food security’ paradigm increased vulnerability to the economic dislocation wrought by the pandemic. It examines the impacts of Covid-19, particularly on (rural) working people and small-scale food producers and how governments across the region responded to these challenges.
Roots of Resilience: How CAP, Farm to Fork, and Land Policies can Support an Agroecological Transition in Europe
By Sylvia Kay, originally published by ARC2020 March 24, 2021 Ed. note: This article first appeared on ARC2020.eu. ARC2020 is a platform for agri-food and rural actors working towards better food, farming, and rural policies for Europe. It is time to rediscover the roots of our resilience by grounding land policy in collective action and democratic forms of land politics. That’s according to a new report led by Transnational Institute.
Land grabbing and land concentration in Europe
04 December 2016 Policy briefing Europe’s young and aspiring farmers will face increasing barriers to entry as land is rapidly concentrated in relatively few big farms. Land is even more unevenly distributed than wealth. A steep decline in Europe’s small farms is underway with damaging consequences for food security, employment, and development.

Democracy not for sale
Executive summary This Report examines the impacts of austerity in Greece on the right to food. It concludes that the Greek State and the Eurozone Member States violated the Greek people’s right to food as a result of the austerity measures required by three Memorandums of Understanding (2010, 2012 and 2015). In other words, the austerity packages imposed on Greece contravened international human rights law.
Black skin, white ally
Few European intellectuals concerned themselves with the dissolution of the imperial projects across the Global South in the mid-20th century; even fewer advocated outright for the independence of European-held African and Asian colonies. Jean-Paul Sartre was perhaps the most influential member of this latter group and began writing on anticolonial resistance in the late 1940s.
