INTRODUCTION In human healthcare in developed countries, the prevalence of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) is 7.6% of total infection rate (Owen & Laird, 2020). In small animal veterinary hospitals, 28.3% (16.3% in dogs and 12% in cats) of patients were reported to have at least one nosocomial syndrome over a 12-week period by Rupel-Czerniak et al. (2013a, 2013b) with the most commonly reported nosocomial syndrome being a surgical site inflammation.
