A Crisis for Utopia: Jameson, the Collective, and the Future of World Literature
Abstract Working with Fredric Jameson’s influential discussions of utopia and world literature, the essay suggests that the prospect of utopia is frightening and also possibly boring insofar as it threatens to drain away the already waning possibility of experience in a postmodern, globalized world.
Historia de la crisis en la “Edad Dorada”: una economía con magnates, desigualdad y resentimiento social
El libro del día "1873: The Rothschilds, the First Great Depression, and the Making of the Modern World", de Liaquat Ahamed A finales del siglo XIX, el mundo atravesó un fenómeno nunca visto antes ni después: una caída continua de precios a nivel global. Ese descenso prolongado duró un cuarto de siglo y comenzó en 1873 tras un colapso financiero internacional. Antes de la década de 1930, este período de deflación, bancarrotas e inestabilidad era conocido como “la Gran Depresión”.
How the Gilded Age Economy Broke the World
1873: The Rothschilds, the First Great Depression, and the Making of the Modern World, by Liaquat Ahamed In the late 19th century, the world endured a phenomenon never seen before or since: a continuous fall in prices across the globe. The long slide lasted for a quarter-century and was kicked off in 1873 by an international financial crash. Before the 1930s, this period of deflation, bankruptcy and instability was known as “the Great Depression.” But it was a strange kind of depression.

The Aging Class | Trevor Jackson
We know how long a human life span is, but what about the life span of a policy regime? If modern retirement was born in 1935 with the passage of the Social Security Act, it is now entering its ninth decade. Over that time retirement has been diminished and degraded; Social Security in particular has survived several assassination attempts.
What Did European Life Look Like at the Dawn of Capitalism?
History is the process of change over time, and the history of something as big and complex as capitalism can easily lose sight of the tangible experience of the people living through it. For that reason, at the beginning, middle, and end of this book we will pause briefly to orient ourselves by looking at the economic world of a convenient, well-known, profoundly weird, and temperamentally apocalyptic historical figure. The people themselves are not important, which is exactly the point.
The Men Who Sold the World | Trevor Jackson
Social disaster is becoming increasingly affordable. On February 12 the Trump administration rescinded the Endangerment Finding, a 2009 EPA determination that “the current and projected concentrations of the six key well-mixed greenhouse gases…in the atmosphere threaten the public health and welfare of current and future generations.” For more than sixteen years the finding had required the EPA, under the Clean Air Act, to track, report, and limit climate-heating pollution from cars and trucks.

The Struggle for the Fed | Trevor Jackson
Is the Federal Reserve omnipotent or impotent? In the aftermath of the 2008 crisis, the Fed embarked on what it called “unconventional monetary policy.” With the fiscal stimulus bills passed in 2008 and 2009 delivering too little direct government spending and the banking sector still reeling, there was no recovery in sight: consumers were still afraid to spend, workers were getting laid off, businesses were closing, and people were losing their homes.

How to Blow Up a Planet | Trevor Jackson
What happened to the future? When did we lose it, and what has taken its place? Political scientists have found a continual decline in visions of a shared transformative future since the early 1980s. Around the world, in party manifestos, inaugural speeches, and programmatic policy documents, principled statements about an open-ended future have given way to numerical targets like GDP growth achieved, emissions reduced, or people deported.

What happens when power and responsibility become unmoored from each other? The political events of recent months have provided new clarity to this old question. The Ungovernable Economy | Trevor Jackson
“Capitalism is predicated on atomized individuals, democracy on shared publics,” writes Trevor Jackson in the Review’s January 16 issue. Reviewing Martin Wolf’s The Crisis of Democratic Capitalism, Jackson examines capitalist democracies past and present to find where the economic system of capitalism and the political system of democracy have aligned and where they have diverged.

‘Never Too Much’ | Trevor Jackson
Something has gone terribly wrong. In his 2004 book Why Globalization Works, the economics journalist Martin Wolf wrote that “liberal democracy is the only political and economic system capable of generating sustained prosperity and political stability.” He was articulating the elite consensus of the time, a belief that liberal democratic capitalism was not only a coherent form of social organization but in fact the best one, as demonstrated by the West’s victory in the cold war.
