I don’t want my parents to arrange my marriage. Could Muslim dating apps be the answer?
I snorted and sank further underneath my cherry-red duvet. The midafternoon sunlight pushing through the blinds cast a glare on my phone, making it hard to view the man whose dating profile I’d stumbled on. This was a profile on Minder, a Muslim dating app that mimics Tinder but is aimed at helping Western Muslims find a spouse. The guy advertising for halal sex (whatever that entails) was an exception; most of the other profiles seemed pretty chaste.
The laughable racist backlash against the $20 bill announcement
You guys! Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew announced this past Wednesday that Harriet Tubman will replace Andrew Jackson on the front of the $20 bill! This is basically a dream come true for me. Tubman embodies grace, strength and resilience; she’s basically the ultimate inspirational figure, and we’re finally honoring her in the most hardcore of ways. I mean, come on. The woman helped hundreds escape the atrocities of slavery. It was high time Jackson got the boot.
This is what we really think about #EqualPayDay
Look outside. Is there a horse and buggy outside? No? We aren’t in the 1800’s?? And women still aren’t being treated or paid equally? Hmph. Would you look at that! April 12 was Equal Pay Day – a day that we unfortunately still need. Today, a woman makes between 44-79 cents for every dollar her male counterpart makes, depending on her ethnicity. #EqualPayDay majorly trended on Twitter for pretty much the entirety of last week, and I had a seriously good time reading through these tweets.
College students in Canada can use frequent flyer miles to pay tuition
As the cost of higher education rises, college students are increasingly turning to unconventional methods to pay for their educations. Now, students studying in Canada can use their frequent flyer miles to lower their student debt. HigherEdPoints is partnering with Air Canada’s loyalty program, Aeroplan, and allowing students and graduates to use their miles — plus those belonging to family and friends — to finance their college education.

Starting this fall, the University of Toledo will offer the country’s first undergraduate major in disability studies. Currently, City University of New York students can only obtain a bachelor’s degree in disability studies through an online program. Other schools — such as Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University and the University of California at Berkeley — offer minors in disability studies. University of Illinois at Chicago has a doctorate program in disability studies.
Study finds link between student's major and parents' income
Students from lower-income households, for one, tend to attend schools with less funding for the arts and humanities, Weeden says.Weeden believes three factors influence the majors chosen by young adults from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. “If you go to a high school where there’s no more music programs, no more arts programs and you can’t afford to buy a trombone to practice with, then you’re probably not going to major in music when you get to college,” says Weeden.
Link found between student’s chosen major, parents’ income
A variety of factors influence an undergraduate student’s choice in major: interest, ability and career plans, among others. And now, a recent findings suggests the parents’ income also plays a part. Students from higher-income families tend to pursue majors in English and history, Kim Weeden, a sociologist from Cornell University found after analyzing data from the National Center for Education Statistics.
Yale students petition to rename Calhoun College
Yale University students are asking the school’s administration to change the name of Calhoun College, one of Yale’s 12 residential colleges, in the wake of the racially-motivated church shooting in Charleston, S.C. The college is named after John C. Calhoun, a 1804 Yale graduate who later went on to become the seventh vice president of the United States.

John Green, the author of The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns, wrote a post on Tumblr on June 11, 2015, responding to allegations of sexual predation posted on the social media site. Green often uses the site to interact with fans. “I bet john green thinks people don’t like him because he’s a ‘dork’ or a nerd or whatever when in reality it’s because he’s a creep who panders to teenage girls so that he can amass some weird cult-like following,” user virjn wrote.
