What was your first job as a journalist?
The Times Higher Education Supplement which became the THE (Global World Rankings for Higher Education/unis/business schools).
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. And then an electronic Olivetti in my first year at university. Then one of the first ever PCs - and early internet in the 1990s.
How is social media changing news?
It has devastated the verification of sources and serious news reporting due to misinformation and disinformation. We need AI to combat that.

What does it mean to be a journalist?
We are the Fourth Estate. Journalists are vital to creating and maintaining a democracy. Serious journalism improves democracies.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
WSIRT Why Should I Read This?!? Was drilled on that in my short time at the Wall Street Journal in BLN by my New York editors (pre-Murdoch) .

Why did you become a journalist?
To discover the truth and share it with others. Offer critical analysis of culture, societies and politics.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was the editor and wrote articles for the school magazine. I also wrote a column on behalf of the school published in The Cairns Post.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Refuse to write for free. Ask and get payment. And keep negotiating for more - or join your local journos' association/union to get support.
