In 2019, an attacker exploited a server-side request forgery vulnerability associated with Capital One’s web Application firewall, obtained credentials associated with an AWS IAM role, and accessed data stored in the company’s cloud environment. The incident showed how a weakness in one application could become a route to sensitive information elsewhere. The application did not need to be a human administrator for its credentials to be dangerous.
