Advocating for Yourself Starts with Exploring Your Resources
Advice to Foster Youth Pursuing Higher Education As a foster youth, graduating high school and finally obtaining a diploma was a huge step toward my success. There were a plethora of times I felt I could not earn my diploma, let alone deserve it. Facing trauma, mental health symptoms and several placements, it was difficult to ever focus my attention strictly on my education.

Defunding Police is Pandemic Recovery
There are two stages of response when facing widespread disasters like earthquakes, wildfires or pandemics: relief and recovery. Media outlets capture the drama of “relief” – images of brave firefighters battling flames in the smoldering ruins of a town, or the National Guard delivering supplies to afflicted citizens.
Supreme Court LGBTQ Ruling is False-Flag Victory
At my very first job, I remember being continually misgendered, sexually harassed and gaslighted while being exploited, paid under the table, expected to work overtime and never compensated for it, and continually asked to work when we were closed, on our own personal time. This was a minimum wage service job. For a long time, I was unaware of how we were being exploited. I just remember feeling constant fear, dread and exhaustion.
I Had to Hide My Personality Due to Fear
Dear God, Thank you for the care and love that you have bestowed upon my family and me. Thank you for allowing me to live a healthy life and to see your light once more. I appreciate all that you do for my family, my friends, myself, and the world. I apologize for my sins; the wrong things I do, see, hear, and say. I know I am a sinner. Please continue to take care of me and guide me as I write about your love and your holy scripture in my testimony. Amen.
If Trump is Re-elected, I’m Fearful for This Country
Ballots are still being counted and this election feels as if it may “make or break” America. Quite literally. Although we’ve heard countless incidents of Donald Trump’s careless mistakes, I have a gut feeling it is much worse than we ever could imagine. Because of his narcissistic tendencies, I can’t bring myself to trust him in any position of power, especially the presidency. Trump’s agenda also impacts women’s rights, being that new Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett is now sworn in.
Racism is a Familiar Fear
Current and former foster youth weigh in on racism and police brutality. Racism and inequality have plagued this nation for hundreds of years. Racism here in the South is a familiar fear.
In My Community, You Don’t Call the Cops
Current and former foster youth weigh in on racism and police brutality. Although I now live in Harlem, I grew up in Ridgewood, New York, a small, immigrant neighborhood where the adults often left the children to fend for themselves as they ventured into the city for work. There was one local precinct, though I don’t remember ever really seeing a heavy police presence. I wouldn’t describe Ridgewood as particularly dangerous.
Our Whole System Must Change
Current and former foster youth weigh in on racism and police brutality. I took interest in social justice after being exposed to protesting. I was only 15 years old in 2016 when Philando Castile was murdered by the police during a routine traffic stop in my city. I couldn’t understand what motivated an individual to commit such a horrendous act. I began to research other fatal police encounters with minorities and was utterly despaired at the information I found.
When the Thin Blue Line Breaks: Racial Divide in America
Current and former foster youth weigh in on racism and police brutality. From a young age, we are taught that the men in blue are our friends, protectors and allies. We put our faith and trust into the familiar uniforms that are responsible for our collective and individual safety and find solace in knowing that they will be there when we need them. The American system has been brought up on this premise of self-governance run by the people, with the people and for the people.
My Human Rights Were Stripped
Current and former foster youth weigh in on racism and police brutality. Racism, sexism and police brutality have been a constant in my life. I remember from a very young age the cops would harass me, constantly trying to find any reason to make an arrest. I could not remember a time when I was not faced with the biased opinions and hatred of the police department. One of my oldest memories is of police officers surrounding a small, frail 12-year-old me.
Protesting Matters
Current and former foster youth weigh in on racism and police brutality. I have always dealt with racial inequality and police harassment. When I was 15 I used to have blue hair, and my foster sister had red hair. One day the police rolled up on us and told us – didn’t even say hi, just told us – what gangs we were from.
Abolishing the Police Is Not the Answer
Current and former foster youth weigh in on racism and police brutality. This year, 2020, has been hard for everyone; between coronavirus and fighting for equality, the world hasn’t had a moment to stop and breathe. Without a doubt, this year has been full of tragedy and sorrow as the number of lives lost continues to grow.
