Articles by Taylor Rees
Newbie from Denver, Colorado
Hi Everyone, I'm a long time Denver resident looking to increase my income through REI, though still exploring what "niches" and locations I'd like to focus my energy on. I currently own my primary residence (purchased in 2011) as well as a rental property (a single family HUD home purchased in 2009), both located in Denver. I was ready to begin exploring real estate as a source of additional income more seriously back in 2011/2012, but then other business opportunities got in the way.
What's in My Bag: Director Taylor Rees for National Geographic's "The Last Tepui"
Director and cinematographer Taylor Rees on her National Geographic Expedition to the Guyana Cloud Forest for her newly released Disney+ show, “The Last Tepui.“ The early planning calls for our expedition to Guyana were mind-boggling. National Geographic writer Mark Synnott and his friend and biologist Dr. Bruce Means walked me through the plan. We’d trek 50 miles through the dense Guyana rainforest to Weiassipu Tepui.
Life After Lynching in “Ashes to Ashes”
Sometimes the artist Winfred Rembert can’t sleep at night. His wife, Patsy, says that it has to do with his work. “Whenever he do one of those pictures, he gets sick,” she explains. “He has to double up on that medicine in order to get some rest.” Rembert first draws his scenes, full of faces and patterns, on paper, then carves the images onto a sheet of tanned leather by hand, texturing the surface with tools that look almost surgical, before filling in the etchings with vivid dyes.
Ashes to Ashes: US Lynchings and a Story of Survival
Winfred Rembert, 74, is a Star Wars fanatic and leather artist who grew up picking cotton on a plantation in Georgia in the United States. He joined the civil rights movement as a teenager and survived a lynching attempt when he was 21 years old.

How a First Date at 13,770-Feet Sparked A Uniquely Adventurous Love Between Two Alpinists
Taylor Rees and Renan Ozturk are professional filmmakers and mountain climbers, though to leave it at that considerably undersells them. It’s like calling Copernicus a Polish stargazer. There’s just no common or formal usage that encompasses everything they do. It entails a lot of disappearing acts into under-discovered, intemperate zones. We all dream of this, of suddenly vanishing, unraveling the derangements of our sunups-to-sundowns, loosening the fissures of lunchtime to discover other worlds.

Renan Ozturk and Fledgling Alpinist Alex Honnold Set Up Camp in Alaska
You might call Alex Honnold a simple man, a purist. He just wants to climb. The less gear, the better. Give him a pair of La Sportiva shoes and lightweight pants from The North Face, and he’ll scale El Capitan — any chalk bag slung around his waist will do. But now that he’s taking on one alpine climb per year, Honnold has had to adjust to new territory. “It’s not just the cold,” he says.

How Hilaree O'Neill Bounced Back from the Most Demoralizing Climb of Her Life
Early last November, Hilaree O’Neill was on a ledge roughly 1,100 feet below the top of Hkakabo Razi, pinned down by one of the harshest winds she’d ever experienced. Hkakabo Razi, in northern Myanmar, is believed to be the highest mountain in Southeast Asia, and O’Neill was leading a two-month expedition to measure the peak’s true height. If successful, it would be only the second ascent of the relatively unexplored mountain, and a month into it her six-person team was coming apart.
The First-Ever Run Across Haiti
Haiti is not usually perceived as a top international tourist destination. But in early March, a group of seven runners set off to show that the country is a place to be celebrated, visited, and invested in. With a relay team and a support crew, the group ran from Cap Haitian to Jacmel, crossing the entire island from north to south in nine days. Running a total of 230 miles, they averaged marathon-distances every day.
