Changes in Arctic and Antarctic sea-ice properties and processes
Abstract Although sea ice covers only ~9% of the world’s oceans, its presence and absence greatly alter the energetic balance of Earth’s climate. Owing to geographic differences, Arctic and Antarctic sea ice have different dominant properties and processes, which in turn produce different responses to natural climate variability and anthropogenic climate change. This Review surveys the changes in sea-ice properties and processes of the Arctic and Antarctic environments.
Smoother sailing for Arctic ice - Nature Climate Change
As Arctic sea ice thinned, it was thought that a weaker, more dynamic ice cover might become more heavily deformed and ridged. Now, analysis of three decades of airborne observations shows instead that the Arctic ice cover has smoothed.
Influence of Physical Factors on Restratification of the Upper Water Column in Antarctic Coastal Polynyas
1 Introduction Antarctic coastal polynyas are key habitats of Antarctic ecosystems and a major source of the Antarctic Bottom Water (Morales Maqueda et al., 2004; Smith & Barber, 2007), which is the lowest branch of global overturning circulation and occupies the abyssal layer of the global ocean.

Direct inference of first-year sea ice thickness using broadband acoustic backscattering
Accurately monitoring sea ice is increasingly important given the rapid and extreme changes that are occurring in the Arctic. Indigenous communities have monitored Arctic sea ice thickness for centuries, but it has only been scientifically monitored on a semi-regular basis since the mid-twentieth century (Wadhams, 200052. Wadhams, P. (2000). Ice in the Ocean ( Gordon and Breach Science Publishers, Amsterdam, the Netherlands), p. 351.).
Changes in snow distribution and surface topography following a snowstorm on Antarctic sea ice
Snow distribution over sea ice is an important control on sea ice physical and biological processes. We combine measurements of the atmospheric boundary layer and blowing snow on an Antarctic sea ice floe with terrestrial laser scanning to characterize a typical storm and its influence on the spatial patterns of snow distribution at resolutions of 1–10?cm over an area of 100?m?×?100?m. The pre-storm surface exhibits multidirectional elongated snow dunes formed behind aerodynamic obstacles.
