Landed an interview for a watch technician role at a boutique. Any advice?
I've never had this kind job before, so I'm coming to the interview with just a passion for watches and some watch repair experience at home in my free time. I'm very excited about landing this interview. Any advice to come better prepared is much appreciated!
Epic Saga of the Mysterious Heirloom: The Watch from Grandpa's Sock Drawer! Help Needed!!
Hello cherished community of timeless timepiece enthusiasts, I have come to you today with a tale that I believe will tug at your horological heartstrings and hopefully, summon your vast expertise. I am interested in a watch, but know nothing about watches... Let me delve into the saga. It all began on a stormy Thursday afternoon. The rain was pounding against the windows like a drumline, and I was meandering through my late grandfather's old, creaky house, which smelled of mothballs and history.
Do you buy "fashion watches"?
Boscov's (a US department store) is having a big storewide sale now and they mostly sell fashion/mall watches. So, I grew curious about other WISsies' buying choices.
Friend just got this Submariner from his mom and thinks it is fake. What say you all?

#2 · So no keys, ring, knife, handkerchief, glasses, flashlight, etc.? Just a watch? But then again, I might be banned for showing my EDC. #4 · #3 · Someone doesn't understand what EDC means. #6 · Uh yeah. Anyone else change their EDC dependant upon the season? Smaller calibre Summers, etc? #8 · Nope, God's caliber year round. I do, however, step it down a few sizes when I'm out of the house but not on the clock. To maintain quantity while being extra sneaky, of course ..

Links/info about watch components' manufacturing quality?
There have been a few discussions here recently about differences in quality of steel and sapphire between low-end and high-end watches. I was wondering if any of the more knowledgeable users here could suggest resources I could read to learn more about how different watch components are manufactured and how, say, 316L steel in a low-end watch differs from 316L steel in a high-end watch. Thank you!
Why are some people so obsessed with lume?
Lume is great if you spend late evenings out and about and you don't want to bring the bright light of your phone out. Noticed that I use lume a lot more when we are traveling.

#1 · Hi, Just got this Seiko5 and now getting to know it. I was expecting this to look and feel good, but it's well beyond my expectations really. Do you guys have any experience with this generation of Seiko5? I understand these to be discontinued now and replaced by more capable models (more capable "movementwise", "WRwise", etc.), but really feels like the previous generation had so much more character and charm to it?

Are aliexpress watches always like this?
#2 · I don't trust AliExpress for anything, so I buy direct from the seller's website. I bought a Watch Dives submariner clomage from their website and it's perfect.

Do you use a brand's desktop, tablet, or mobile website to purchase watches when buying online? [Poll]
#1 · a moment ago I'm putting together a UX/UI portfolio project to use when I look for work. This project is a concept microbrand's website. I was wondering which devices people who buy watches online prefer to use: desktop, tablet, or smartphone. Thanks for your help! When I'm finished my portfolio project, I'll post it here for everyone to see.
Best & worst watch website experiences?
Hey all, I am creating a portfolio to apply to UX design jobs (UX = user experience, basically, how you feel using a website or app). One of my portfolio projects is creating an example microbrand watch website. I was wondering if you could share your best and worst experiences navigating watch websites -- could be from big brands or microbrands. For example, for me, one of the most important things is being able to browse the brand's entire watch collection according to price.
The Existential Question of Watches
As with all material goods, there is no answer to the why and wherefore ... There is passion and there is detachment, two faces on the same coin.
Newbie misconceptions you always see?
What are some newbie misconceptions about watches that you constantly see and that you'd like to clarify? As a newbie, I just learned (in another recent thread of mine) that acrylic, mineral, hardlex, and sapphire all have their own uses and benefits and none are necessarily better than the other -- despite watch marketing making me think sapphire was objectively better than mineral in all cases.
If even the cheapest microbrands use sapphire glass, why don't larger brands?
Why hasn't sapphire become the standard? Why are bigger brands still using mineral glass? Edit: I removed "Timex" from the thread title because people kept focusing on that when it was just an example, not the focus. MONTA Skyquest Review from Watchuseek A weekender is like $30. Thats pretty much the cost of an entire sapphire crystal. Current: 14060m, El Primero 1969, Speedy FOIS, Antea KS, Orion Minimatik, ST8000SA Tourbillon Former: Zeppelin 7618-1, 16200, Pam48, AT8500, A weekender is like $30.

Classy/elegant Gold Watches? (Not necessarily real gold, but just gold-colored)
Sometimes, gold watches bring to mind the quote by Dolly Parton: "It costs a lot of money to look this cheap." But I do find some gold watches catching my eye from time to time. Which gold(-colored) watches do you think look good?Vacheron Constantin recently featured their Overseas self-winding watch on their Instagram account, and I think it looks quite elegant. If my girlfriend and I were rich out the ass, then I'd probably buy it for her:
Wearing a broken watch just for looks?
Erm …… no. I know you can tell the time on your phone….but really…… " I am easily impressed by the best" - Winston Churchill. "One cannot but admire the cold-bravery and enterprise of these Italians" Admiral Cunningham, referring to the frogmen of the M.A.S in WW2. I sometimes wear a watch that is pretty much impossible to read in most light conditions. So pretty useless for telling time. But i still wind it and set the time before putting it on.
Watch designs: do you prefer more conservative and "classic" designs, more colourful and creative designs, or a mix between the two? [Poll]

Does anyone know the provenance of this Sandoz?
Since 1971 the Sandoz brand name has been split into four main areas of production, due to its licences being leased or sold. This has led to four separate brands, Sandoz Singapore, Sandoz Hong Kong, Sandoz Swiss, and Sandoz Spain (Munreco). All of these produce watches under the Sandoz name, but each production company has its own line of products.
Anybody else sometimes feel like starting fresh?

Seiko mods that turned out to be illegal counterfeits (removed link to website)
My friend just told me about this website. It features Seiko mods that are all homages to more luxury-end watches, such as the Royal Oak, Nautilus, etc. I haven't bought anything from them, but the quality looks pretty solid from the photos. EDIT: as other members have pointed out below, the watches are likely counterfeit and illegal. So, i removed the link to the store

Tiffany Blue PRX - Phew! What a beaut!
Originally, I wasn't a fan of the PRX, but the design began to grow on me, and then I visited an AD tonight and checked out this Tiffany Blue model. Wow! Love the color. And it looks nice on my wrist. Maybe a couple millimeters smaller in diameter would be even better. Fits ever so slightly a bit big. But I'm convinced now. PRX is awesome.
Which Seiko do you think would be a good beater? (Traveling to Japan soon)
Choice 1 - Seiko 5 Sports SKX Sports Style (US$262.83): I'm going on vacation to Japan in a couple months and I'd like to buy a nice Seiko to travel with and to be tough enough to handle travelling. I know the choice will ultimately be mine, but it'd be nice to see what others think too. Sorry for the low-res photos -- I snapped these tonight at a Seiko AD.
Accurist Origin Men's Chronograph
Just bought this bad boy as a gift for a watch-enthusiast friend. I tried it on to see how it feels and looks and to share wrist shots with others here. Here's the listing on Accurist's website. Unfortunately, when ordered from their website, Accurist only ships within the UK, so I had to order it from their Amazon listing. 10/10 would recommend. Beautiful watch, excellent quality, great price.
What came first: The outfit or the watch?
When I first started getting into watches, the outfit always came first, and I bought watches more or less based on how they'd fit my wardrobe. But the deeper I get into watches, I find the trend is reversing. I am still concerned with how a watch will fit in with my wardrobe, my personality, and the way I'd like to present myself to both myself and others, but more and more the watch itself comes first and ideas about which clothes could go with it come later. How about you?
Wow! All new watches from the Chronologic Horologistic Nuclear Watch Co.!
The Brick Watch - As Sturdy As They Come You don't need to spend a fortune to get a watch that will last. The Brick Watch is affordably priced but built to withstand life's bumps and knocks. Weighing just 2.04 kg, its sturdy case and scratch-resistant face are designed to handle whatever comes their way. Whether you're working, playing sports, hiking, or taking care of your children, the Brick Watch won't let you down.
When browsing B&M watch shops, does anyone else grow weary of seeing rolexes everywhere? (not hating on rolex owners)
NOTE: i am in NO WAY hating on rolex owners. a common refrain on this forum is that the best watch is the one YOU like, and if you like rolexes, i have ZERO issue with that. there are some rolexes i think look nice, though most of them aren't my style. and that's OK. i'm ONLY focusing on their hype and ubiquity, particularly in B&M watch shops, and the brand image that rolex itself tries very hard to convey.
More affordable and justifiable alternatives to the Tissot Chrono XL Classic?
This watch caught my eye, but I don't think the price is justified, especially considering the cheapness of the movement. For this price, I could get a nice Seiko or Citizen with an in-house movement. However, I like the look of this watch, and I'm looking for suggestions for watches that look similar to it, but offer more value for the price. (NB: I'm saying I can't afford this watch, so please don't suggest that I buy it if I like it -- I also don't think it has value for the price).
Getting a women's watch even though I'm a dude?
There's a nice Orient Sun & Moon that I'm considering getting, but I noticed in the store that it's slightly small and I found out it's a women's watch when I looked it up online. I'm not terribly concerned with gender norms and all that jazz, but I am curious to read others' thoughts on the...
A couple nice Casios I just bought my friend
My friend is starting grad school soon, so I decided to get him a couple watches as a gift to congratulate him on the beginning of his new journey. He doesn't wear a watch, and he's a very frugal, down-to-earth person. But he is also concerned with fashion and looking good. So I figured Casio was the best choice to fit his style and personality. This vintage-style digital, which I think would be good for daily wear: And this analog, which I think would be good for dates or meetings:
Should I get this watch? (joking)
Per the website: "This watch also looks perfect with business attire enabling you to easily spice up a normal outfit and add style to your life." Wow! I'll be sure to wear this to all my future business meetings!
A nice watch a friend gifted me today from a now-defunct microbrand
My friend told me his mom's friend had won it in a raffle at a wedding, and then gifted it to my friend's mom, who then gifted it to my friend, who only wore it once or twice before deciding it wasn't his style. It's been sitting on his shelf in its original box gathering dust for about 5 years. When I told him I'd recently gotten into watches, he decided to gift me the watch.
More poetic watch youtubers who tell a story with the watches?
Any recommendations? I'd like to find something like Watchfinder & Co, where a watch is given a story and is discussed more poetically. Like every other watch youtuber i've seen just does basic reviews, recommendations, and click-baity videos telling you not to buy MVMT. btw, yes, i have searched this forum for suggestions with no luck.

What got you into watches, and what is it about them that you find so appealing?
My interested in watches recently exploded out of seemingly infinitesimal nothing, much like the Big Bang. I'm in the "inflationary period" of my burgeoning universe of passion for watches -- my excitement has led to the rapid expansion of my collection in a short time. However, I can feel the dust begin to settle and I'm slowly becoming more patient and discerning.
Some beautiful Casios I spotted at a shop in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong
I saw these watches at Lucky Time watch shop in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. (Address: 149A Cheung Sha Wan Rd, Sham Shui Po). I've been to them twice so far and their service was excellent. They even matched another dealer's lower price for a watch I wanted to get. If you're ever in Hong Kong and looking for an affordable watch, I highly recommend them. (Some other watch dealers in Hong Kong are total jerks with zero customer service skills).
(crosspost) What do you think of this Shanghai Watch Company watch?
Opinions? Thoughts? I'm giving myself a couple weeks to think it over. This watch really struck my eye when I saw it a couple months back. It's on sale for Father's Day, originally priced at US$381, but now down to US$226. Not sure about the movement, but other Shanghai watches in this price range use a Miyota 8205/8215 movement or a (I'm guessing equivalent) "Chinese" movement. It's got a pearl inlay.

Some of my watch collection (new watch enthusiast)
Here's most of the watches I own. I bought the top-left one on a whim during a recent trip to Tokyo. I thought it looked great with my outfit and helped complete it. Since then, I've quickly become hooked and have developed quite a passion for watches and I've amassed 12 more watches. (I'd never had even a slight interest in watches before, but as I'm nearing 40, maybe this is a mid-life crisis? Hahaha. I doubt it though, it's just my tastes have changed).
Help identifying this Sandoz
Hello, everybody! I recently have become enamored with watches and bought this lovely mechanical Sandoz from an antique shop in Hong Kong. It didn't come with any papers, and I paid about 76 USD for it. I have tried looking up info about it online but to no avail; all I could find was just general information about the company.
