Essays about Equality
I am pleased to introduce our new essay series, We Could Almost Touch It, which aims to amplify the voices of women and delve into the state of women since the 2016 presidential election. Similar to our Featured Abortion Stories, this series is designed to provide a platform for women to share their experiences and stories. In 2016, I found myself caught between misogyny on the right and misogyny on the left.

Without Time
Teresa Berkowitz is a writer and poet from Portland, Maine. Teresa grew up in a family of storytellers. She believes that the greatest truths can be found in fiction and real life can be strangely surreal and dramatic. As a young woman, Teresa would explore the headlands in Marin equipped with a bottle of water, trail mix, and a journal. She would let the trails take her to black-sand beaches or redwood groves. In those sacred spaces, she would take what troubled her and craft fairy tales.
Slippin’ Away
By Myna Chang Can almost see that double-dare girl now, pullin’ down storms, reaching for trouble. Eyes green as tornado sky. Teased a honeyboy from Eufaula till he started talkin’ love. Stole his daddy’s Caddy right out front the church, raced a flash of summer lightning clear through the other side—Oklahoma to Nashville, splickety-lit, then no more honeyboy, no more preachin’ daddy, just a deluge of smooth songbird nights, and that sweet slow slide into age, luscious as midnight rain.
The Rising Tides
I was reading an article today in the Bangor Daily News about rising sea levels and the impact of housing on the ability of the Scarborough Marsh to respond to climate change. The Scarborough Marsh is breathtaking and dear to me. In 2020, I wrote an essay that became a finalist entry in 350 Wisconsin’s 2020 personal climate stories. I must have written the essay in their online form because I never found a copy of it.
June 2022 MoonBite: Making Amends
Making Amends As I pass the smashed fence at the base of the soft hills, pink at twilight, I always think of you. Of course I do. Even when I look away, it’s there, the shattered two by four and tangled wire mess. If got close, could I trace your journey in the ruptured wood? Find the imprint of our shared memories or your bumper on the oak tree that absorbed your impact? I’ve spent hours pondering how to fix that boundary.
Revenge Savings
by Dominique Margolis Incest has a particular odor. Mine is roadkill. I thought that I could forget the past if I moved to America at the age of twenty, but I was wrong. For thirty more years, I was still just a day shy of six years old and still on a narrow mountain road in the Auvergne region of France, thousands of miles away from American roads and the English language and all my dreams of liberation from trauma.
