Starting Over, Changing Genres: The Patient by Teri Terry
Author Teri Terry on consciously making the switch from YA to adult fiction. Like so many people, things changed over lockdown in 2020. I had the time to stop and think about what I was doing, and why – in a way that doesn’t always happen in a busy life. It set me on an uncertain road, but finally resulted in the publication of psychological thriller The Patient by Bookouture, with another to follow in June.
Pros and Cons of Writing Multiple Points of View in Psychological Thrillers
Years ago, as a reader, I didn’t like multiple points of view, to the point where I’d even avoid books that contained them. I particularly didn’t like the sort where a significant chunk of a book was in one point of view, and just when I was swept up with the character and their plight and they were backed up at the top of a cliff—boom. (A Checklist for Writing Psychological Thrillers.) You’d swap into someone else’s head. I found it both jarring and annoying.
Five reasons I’ve made the leap from writing for young adults to adult crime fiction by Teri Terry
I’m an established, award-winning author of YA novels and trilogies, many with a dystopian bent, like the Slated trilogy and Mind Games; others delve into the supernatural, like my newest, a ghost story called Scare Me. But I’ve spent the last two years pursuing a different path: a life of crime, written for adults. I played with multiple genres and ideas before deciding to go with The Patient, a psychological thriller, publishing on 13 February 2024 with Bookouture.

SUBJECT 369X SHETLAND INSTITUTE, SCOTLAND Time Zero: 32 hours CHAPTER 1 THEY SAY I'M SICK, and I need to be cured. But I don't feel sick. Not anymore. They wear shiny jumpsuits that cover everything, from their shoes to the paper hats that hide their hair, making them look strange and alien — more Doctor-Who villains than anything human. They reach hands to me through heavy gloves in the transparent wall, push me into the wheelchair, and do up the straps that hold me in it tight.
