Guest columnist Terrence McCarthy: Memories made in Easthampton
E-Edition Advertise Newsletters Subscribe Home News Opinion Sports Business Arts & Life Obituaries Classifieds Calendar Puzzles Easthampton over Williston and Payson avenues and Cottage Street. along with Nashawannuck Pond. I’m proud to be able to boast I am a product of the mill town in which I grew up. The man I am now was made in Easthampton. Not unlike what was manufactured in the red brick-walled factories in which my mother and father toiled back in the 1950s and 1960s.
Guest columnist Terrence McCarthy: Yard sale blues
Prospective buyers look over items in a yard sale held to raise money for the Lyndeborough, N.H., Historical Society. As my wife, Donna, and I were hauling assorted items out of our house and garage in North Carolina the other day, I couldn’t help but try to recollect if anyone I knew growing up in Easthampton ever did what we were doing: preparing for a yard sale. I lived in two apartment houses on Main Street until I was 18 years old and went off to college.
Guest columnist Terrence McCarthy: Is conversation a lost art?
A book was published recently, the gist of which can be summed up by a line uttered by a character in the Paul Newman film “Cool Hand Luke.” To wit: “What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.” The book is titled “Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection.” Its author is Charles Duhigg. Duhigg posits that conversation has become a lost art. Much of the blame is attributed to social media sites like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter ) etc.
Guest columnist Terrence McCarthy: ‘Rough Sleeper’ is our neighbor
I just bought Tracy Kidder’s new book “Rough Sleepers.” The title refers to people.who are experiencing homelessness in the state’s capital city, Boston. Kidder’s focus is on Boston physician Jim O’Connell’s mission to help that city’s legions of rough sleepers. This book reminded me of another book written by Kidder, “Mountains Beyond Mountains,” which was set in Haiti, and whose main character was another doctor, Paul Farmer, whose heroic efforts saved the lives of many Haitians.
Guest columnist Terrance McCarthy: Days of hoops and crises on the TV
A house just a few doors down from ours in southeastern North Carolina has a basketball hoop set up in its driveway. The residents are relatively new neighbors, having moved here just a few months ago. So far I have yet to see anyone taking shots at that rim. The driveway is like the parks we drive by, parks with baseball diamonds and basketball courts. We never see anyone playing the kinds of pickup games my pals and I played when we were boys back in the early 1960s.
Something new emerges
Recently, I’ve been reflecting on grief—not simply the sorrow experienced upon loss of a loved one but any type of loss. We grieve when we lose a job or experience financial difficulties. We grieve when we face challenges to our health and, daily, when we face chronic pain, illness or disability. We grieve when we must change short-term plans unexpectedly or when our long-term expectations aren’t realized. In the moment, I haven’t always been aware of these small daily doses of grief.
Guest column Terrence McCarthy: How are you doing?
Published: 4/17/2020 6:17:16 PM Modified: 4/17/2020 6:17:04 PM How y’all doing? is a question all of us should be asking these days. We're all on the same boat, like sailors on an aircraft carrier, or passengers on a cruise liner sailing through troubled waters. How are you doing, and what are you doing to pass the time it’s going to take to get through this? Are you and your husband, wife or partner getting along, or getting on each others’ nerves?
Guest column Terrence McCarthy: Basic training
Published: 3/18/2020 1:51:19 PM A question I’ve been asking myself in the past few days is: What is this like? This being, of course, the pandemic. And the changes we’re all being asked to make in the ways we live our lives. Watching sports on TV is nearly impossible. No MLB, NHL, PGA and NBA. There are no Broadway or other kinds of shows. Restaurants are closed. We’re being told by various powers that be to distance ourselves from friends, even family. What’s this like for yours truly? Basic training.
