An Official Journal Of The NRA | Building Your Own Home Defense AR-15
Normally, when we discuss home-defense firearms, images of shotguns and handguns will quickly come to mind. Both have their place in the defensive armory, but they have drawbacks. Shotguns typically have limited capacity, are slow to reload and the recoil of a 12 gauge can be brutal. Handguns may improve capacity and are quicker to reload, but the power of a handgun round is limited. There is another selection you could make for a home defense weapon: a semi-automatic carbine.
The New Wilson Combat 300 HAM'R Cartridge Is Here
The following piece on the Wilson Combat 300 HAM’R cartridge is from an article in the upcoming winter 2019 issue of Ballistic Magazine. Read the entire story when the winter 2019 hits newsstands Oct. 9. Grab your copy or subscribe at OutdoorGroupStore.com. There are times when we do something just because we can.
Wilson Combat Drops 5 New 300 HAM'R Rifles For Its New Cartridge
With the introduction of its new cartridge, Wilson Combat has also released five 300 HAM’R rifles to go with it. Bill Wilson developed the 300 HAM’R cartridge with “optimal terminal performance” in mind; early tests show just that.
Bug-Out Beast: The Ruger Model 6829 Gunsite Scout Rifle
Contrary to belief, there is nothing wrong with a little controversy when it adds a bit of zest to the conversation. This statement really holds true if the conversation concerns firearms. This eventually leads us to the Ruger Model 6829 Gunsite Scout Rifle. But first, start a discussion on the merits of the 9mm Luger cartridge compared to the .45 ACP, or the AK versus the AR, and the conversation will surely turn lively.
Gun Test: Wringing Out the Smith & Wesson M&P9 M2.0
After the latest announcement from Smith & Wesson, I can’t help but to remember a quote from Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) in The Godfather Part III: “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!” This is where I should explain that I have suffered an addiction for Smith & Wesson handguns for well over four decades. My first centerfire handgun was a S&W Model 10 Military & Police, and that medium-frame revolver was soon sitting next to a Model 28 Highway Patrolman in .357 Magnum.
The Emergency Responder's Knife
Oregon-based knife maker Kershaw introduced a ton of new designs in 2017, and if you’re a professional emergency responder — or you just want to be ready for anything — you might want to check out the Kershaw Barricade. The Kershaw Barricade boasts all the features you need in an emergency knife wrapped up in a “bright orange ‘see me’ package,” the press release says. It includes a carbide glassbreaker built into the butt end.
Ritter & Stark Introduces the SLX-308 Short-Action Precision Rifle
Austria-based gun maker Ritter & Stark recently unveiled its new SLX series multi-caliber, short-action precision bolt-action rifle. The first offering in this line is the SLX-308, which, you guessed it, is chambered in .308 Win./7.62×51 NATO. This rifle will eventually be available in .260 Rem. and 6.5 Creedmoor as well. It’s essentially a lighter weight, short-action model of R&S’s first product, the SX-1.
Wolverines! 'Red Dawn' and the Steyr Maadi AKM
“In our time, no foreign army has ever occupied American soil. Until now.” I can still recite those words, and the first time I read them was in early August of 1984—off at college and cycling between part-time jobs and full-time studies. Ronald Reagan was our president then, and like many single graduate students, I didn’t have a lot of spare change. But I went to see the movie Red Dawn on opening day, and it made a big impression on me.
Elite Patriot: The All-American P-51 Carbon from Patriot Weaponry
If you have been shopping for an AR-15, the task should have gotten a little easier. A year ago, you might’ve sucked it up and learned to appreciate whatever you could get, but now is the time to relax and consider your next firearms purchase wisely. You might be a competitor hot and heavy into 3-Gun matches, or you may be seriously concerned about home defense. You may want to do a little mid-range varmint hunting or even prepare to join the next generation of Minute Men.
