What was your first job as a journalist?
Does a junior high school newspaper count?
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Lord, yes, and carbon paper. Go Google that kiddos!
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Freedom. Especially where I'm writing now. No deadlines. No subject (for the most part) is off-limits.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Grammarly for sure. Google Scholar for references and research. That's about it.
What's your favorite social network?
Believe it or not, Medium.
Why did you become a journalist?
That's like asking me why I breathe. I have to in order to live.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I didn't write for the school paper. I had an independent news column in 5 local papers that covered 2 states.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
You'll want to sit down for this one. It wasn't any investigative journalism piece. When I wrote about my unique abilities.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Don't quit. I know it sounds cliche but it's true. Step back awhile if you need to but ever give up.
What's your favorite drink?
If I'm being a good girl it's caffeine-free Pepsi. If I'm being naughty then it's Dr. Pepper.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Me? Without my laptop? Are you mad??
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
God, there are so many but I guess the Washington Post and USA Today.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Sexism and ageism. Females and "boomers" have their own expiration dates. God help you of you're both!
