Have you ever used a typewriter?
Manual and electric. My favorite were IBM Selectrics. Used them in my last two radio and first television gigs.
How is social media changing news?
It's making truth, transparency and accuracy harder to uphold. As journalists, we have to adapt to changes and strengthen these principles.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Clark Kent. He fought for truth, justice and the American way.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was a general assignment or class reporter. It was a small, rural school - only 6 people in my graduating class.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
The coverage of 9/11. I was at the U.S. Capitol when Flight 93 would have arrived. Journalists ran toward danger that day.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Be flexible. The industry has changed radically since I started my career and flexibility has allowed me to survive those changes.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
"Get to the [local airport]. The Army's redeploying troops from training." I broke the story of one of the first actions in Desert Shield.
What's your favorite drink?
Single malt Scotch, neat.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Behind a camera. I don't work in television news anymore, but film making is a hobby and I prefer storytelling for fun instead of profit.
