Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

As an intern: The Conversation. Paid: editorial assistant at Sciencealert.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, but only playing with one as a child. The clickity clacks were very satisfying!

How is social media changing news?

Very chaotically! Incredible in some ways like, connecting researchers directly to the public but has decimated mainstream science journalism

Why did you become a journalist?

To give voice to all the living things and vast complex systems that we take for granted, but without which we would not survive.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Haha, no. I always believed in what I had to say but lacked the confidence to think anyone would want to hear it from me.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Persistence was key for me (for 10 yrs!). Not all have the resources for this, but that doesn't mean you're not good enough, so much is luck.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Exploring Australia's wilderness.
