Starre Vartan’s Biography

Based in the Seattle Area, Starre is a freelance science and environment writer with a focus on wildlife, technology, geology and water resources, medicine and astrobiology. Her work has been published in National Geographic, Scientific American, CNN, Medium, Slate, NASA's Astrobiology magazine, Gizmodo, Mental Floss, Hakai, and many more.

Starre also manages social media accounts for nonprofit science organizations.

Starre is the founder and editor of Eco-Chick.com, an award-winning 12-year-old website that covers eco feminism and worldchanging women. Eco-Chick and Starre have been featured in the New York Times (thrice), the Wall Street Journal, the Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, Glamour, Self, Elle.com and many green blogs. Starre has been featured as an expert on morning news shows for ABC-7 NY, Fox, & the WB NY.

Previously, Starre was the conscious consumption columnist for MNN.com; managing editor of Greenopia.com; a contributor-at-large to Martha Stewart’s Whole Living magazine; a style editor at Plenty magazine; a dining columnist for the Fairfield County Weekly; the ‘Green Guru’ columnist for Audubon Magazine; the ‘StarrePower’ columnist at Hearst’s The Daily Green; and was a contributing writer for 8 years to E/The Environmental Magazine.

Her first book, “The Eco Chick Guide to Life: How to Live Fabulously Green,” was published by St. Martin’s Press in September, 2008.

Starre was born in Sydney, Australia and is a dual citizen, having split her youth between the beaches Down Under and the Hudson Highlands of New York: The lush woods, deep green lakes, and precipitous mountains there—and the majestic Hudson River—still inspire her.
