Pacific paternalism keeping families apart
In July of this year, the Australian government introduced a new aged care visa. The Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement (ACLA) allows the employment of aged care workers on temporary visas, with the prospect of a pathway to permanency. To qualify, workers have to be offered a salary of at least $51,222. This is well below the minimum required for a normal temporary work visa (the Temporary Skills Shortage visa), which has recently been increased to $70,000.

Children and empathy
Happy White Sunday to all our geniuses and well done to parents who've cheered on the tauloto, mouthed bribes of ice cream and potential punishment for those who refuse to finish. Don't sweat the small things, before you know it, your five-year-old will be in college and you're left asking about where the time went. Congratulations to all teachers as well, it's been a celebration for you. Malo lava. This week we are discussing empathy.
Samoa Observer | The Journey
“We must go on because we can’t turn back.” Robert Louis Stevenson I grew up at Vaitele, a village close to the town area of Apia. In my family, there are six members. All my life I was only familiar with members of my dad’s family. Often Mum talks about her family in Savaii. I listened a lot to her many stories about her family but I had no idea which part of Savai’i she comes from. Until one school holiday, my parents decided to take us to see my mum’s parents and family in Savai’i.
Following a whole food plant based diet
In our previous column, we discussed the dangers caused by the gradual and insidious build-up of cholesterol deposits (also called ‘plaque’) within the inner lining of the coronary arteries that supply the heart muscle, eventually leading to a heart attack or worse. METI has been promoting the whole food plant-based (WFPB) diet for the past decade for the arrest and eventual reversal of such acquired heart disease.
The Darkest 15th Day of September 2021 memorial
Our by-elections in three political districts closed at 3 pm last Friday and at 5 pm the same day a memorial ceremony was held at the Human Rights Protection Party Headquarters at Petesa, Mulinu’u. To keep alive in our memory the darkest day in our political history when HRPP Members of Parliament were prevented by the Police, on orders from the FAST Party Government, from taking their oaths of allegiance to serve God and our country following our General Elections on 9 April 2021.

Effective physiotherapy exercises for wheelchair users
Talofa Samoa and welcome back to your weekly Physiotherapy Column. Today’s column is from CB Physiotherapy and suggests exercises for wheelchair users; enjoy! However, for people who are wheelchair-bound, it can be challenging to find exercises that are safe, effective, and enjoyable.
Elevated IGF-1 levels promote aging, cancer cell spread
Over the last several of our weekly Columns, we have focused on cancer in its various aspects. We pointed out that an imported discovery –more than 20 years ago- found that cancer is linked to a high blood level of a growth hormone going by the long name of Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1).
A partnership to be proud of
Prime Minister of Japan It was more than 20 years ago in 1997 when the leaders of Japan and the Pacific island countries first gathered in Tokyo to launch the first Japan-Pacific Island Leaders Meeting (P.A.L.M., then known as the Japan-South Pacific Forum Summit Meeting). Japan was among the first countries to establish a summit-level framework dedicated to forging stronger ties with Pacific island countries. Our achievements since then have surpassed what many had expected.
About avoiding those mistakes
If you concern yourself with backing away from or avoiding repeated mistakes, you are not likely to find yourself “backing –up” into achievement or success. It has been traditional to believe that the avoidance of mistakes will result in progress. Yet it should be clear that not getting what you don’t want, is quite different from getting what you do want. For instance, the avoidance of war, is not at all the same as the achievement of peace.

New Zealand voters energised
Only a few more days to go before New Zealand voters find out whether the National Party will have a fourth term in government. Several polls to date, the latest was last week, indicate that the Labour Party will most likely oust National and form a government with the Green Party. Voting opened last week and more than 360,000 have already cast their vote, the majority of whom appears to be young people aged 18-35 years. That figure will increase this week with more being expected to vote early.
We lose to guns and bullets, we lose ourselves Samoa
With the blessing of P.M. Tuilaepa and the Human Rights Protection Party, former L.A.P.D officer and new police chief, Fuiava Egon Keil immediately infused a brand new leadership style upon assuming full responsibility of Samoa’s police force. Guns and bullets. They are the new normal now for Samoa and it is generating a lot of fear and public concerns.
Dealing with Peer Pressure
Make a joke. You can also shut down a request from a peer by turning the request into a joke. This shows the person that you think the request is laughable, which will quickly tell them that you won’t listen to them. This can be tricky to do if you’re not the sort of person that makes jokes easily but with a little preparation, you can be ready for any situation. Make an excuse to leave. Another option is to get out of the situation by leaving. Make an excuse for why you need to leave quickly.
